Historical Description
SITHNEY is a parish and village, near the high road from Penzance to Helston, 2 miles south from Nancegollan station on the Helston branch of the Great Western railway, 8 south from Camborne, 2 north-west from Helston, in the Truro division of the county, hundred of Kerrier, petty sessional division of Kerrier West, Helston union and county court district, rural deanery of Kerrier, archdeaconry of Cornwall and diocese of Truro. The church of St. Sithney is a building of granite, in the Pointed style, consisting of chancel with aisles, nave of four bays, aisles, transepts, south porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing 3 bells, all cast in 1771: the porch retains a stoup: there are mural monuments to Richard Hoblyn esq. and Anne (Carew), his wife, both of whom died in February, 1692 ; and John Arundel, 1671; some fragments remain of a brass to Roger Trewythynnyk, one of the King’s justices, c. 1410; these include the inscription and portions of a stepped floriated cross, inscribed with the legend, “Ihu mercy,” on each limb: the arms of the Penrose family are inserted in a window on the south side: there are 320 sittings: in the churchyard is a memorial to Edward Coode, of Treesa, gent. 1662, and one to John Oliver, of Trevarno, 1741. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1667; marriages and burials, 1664. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £238, with residence and 17 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Bishop of Truro, and held since 1891 by the Rev. Charles Fursdon Rogers M.A. of Trinity College, Oxford. There is a Mission room attached to St. Sithney at Gwavas. At Chynhale is a Wesleyan chapel, erected in 1879, at a cost of £2,500; the organ was the gift of the Misses Bickford-Smith; the chapel holds 250 persons: there is also a Wesleyan chapel at Church Town, Free Methodist chapels at Tregathenan, Anvower and Crown Town, and a Bible Christian chapel at Anvower. A small charity of £2 15s. yearly is for poor widows. In 1893 the late Miss Smedley, of Park Venton, bequeathed £100 for the poor of St. John’s, to be held in trust by the vicar and churchwardens for the time being, the interest to be given to the Helston Dispensary, and tickets for the benefits thereof to be given to the poor of Sithney. Lomax Silver Lead Mine in this parish is not now worked. In 1890 a reservoir was constructed at Tregathenan in this parish, capable of holding 3,000,000 gallons; it is the property of the Helston and Porthleven Water Co. and is to provide Helston, Sithney and Porthleven with water. Trevarno, the residence of William Bickford-Smith esq. J.P. stands in a valley near the high road from Helston to Camborne; the present mansion incorporates part of the ancient house erected about 1547, by the late C. W. Popham esq. who also built the portico, which has granite pillars of the Ionic order; the present owner has considerably enlarged the mansion and built the library, a spacious apartment, 42 feet by 32 feet; the floor is of parquet oak inlaid with ebony and Italian walnut, and the cornice is decorated with the emblazoned coats of the family; the library comprises over 8,000 volumes: there are many oil paintings, 50 of which are from the brush of Mr. Bickford-Smith himself: the dining room is furnished with a magnificent suite of carved black oak: the grounds, 50 acres in extent, include gardens, pasture and wood and contain a tropical garden, and in the valley a sheet of water; 120 different species of coniferae are growing here: some historic interest attaches to the house from the fact that Alexander Pope visited here when the property belonged to Mr. Oliver, and that the property once belonged to Charles Wallace, the composer. Capt. John Peverell Rogers R.A. of Penrose, William Bickford-Smith esq. and the trustees of the late J. Samuel Spry esq. are the chief landowners. The soil is partly loamy and sandy; the subsoil is marl in the north-east portion of the parish, resting on granite, the rest on killas. The chief crops are corn, hay and roots and a little broccoli. The area is 5,898 acres, of which 65 is water; rateable value, £10,342; the population, including Porthleven, in 1891 was 3,290.
BOSCADJACK, 3 miles north-east; CROWNTOWN, 1 mile north; and PROSPIDNICK, 1 ½ miles north-north-east, are hamlets. On Higher Prospidnick stands a logan stone, called “Men Amber,” 11 feet long, 6 broad and 4 thick, and on Prospidnick Hill is a fallen cromlech, called “The Giant’s Quoit,” 18 feet long, 12 broad and 2 thick: on Longstone downs stands a pillar of unwrought granite (from which this spot takes its name); it is now 10 feet only above the ground and about 2 feet thick: some traces remain here of ancient earthworks.
