Historical Description

SOUTH HILL is a parish between the rivers Tamar, Lynher and Inny, and within 1 mile from the high road from Callington to Bodmin by Five Lanes, 3 miles north-by-west from Callington, 10 south from Launceston, 9 north-east from Liskeard station on the Great Western railway and 12 west from Tavistock, in the North Eastern division of the county, middle division of the hundred of East, petty sessional division of East Middle, union of Liskeard, county court district of Liskeard, rural deanery of East, archdeaconry of Bodmin and diocese of Truro. A bridge of four arches crosses the Lynher at Kerner bridge. The church of St. Sampson, anciently appendant to the great manor or franchise of Killiland, now the property of the Countess Compton and George Sydney Strode-Strode esq. is a building of stone, chiefly in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, north transept or Manaton chantry, south aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing 5 bells: the ancient Norman font is carved with grotesque figures of dragons and a representation of the tree of life: the chancel retains its piscina, and there is another in the transept, as well as a double-arched Easter sepulchre and hagioscope: the transept contains also a monument with effigy and singular rhyming inscription, to Michael Hill, ob. 1663, and an incised stone to John Manaton, ob. 1507, his wife and others of that family, 1501—28, with shields of arms: the east window is a memorial, erected by his widow, to Rear-Admiral Samuel Thornton, who was drowned at sea, May 16th, 1859, and there are five other memorial windows : in 1888 a tower screen was erected as a memorial to the late rector : the church was restored in 1871 at great expense, and has 200 sittings. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1538 ; marriages, 1566 ; burials, 1550. The living is a rectory with that of Callington annexed, joint net yearly value £594, including 250 acres of glebe in South Hill and Callington, with residence, in the gift of the Countess Compton, and held since 1886 by the Rev. John Shaw M.A. of St. Catharine’s College, Cambridge. There is a Mission chapel at Trevigro, and divine service is also held in the school room at Trewoodla. At Golberdon, in this parish, is a Wesleyan chapel. There is a charity of about £13 yearly derived from the rent of a farm at Trewolland, which is distributed at Lady day amongst the poor. On the glebe farm is an ancient baptistery or well, called “St. Sampson’s well.” In 1891 in the course of a search then being made for “St. Sampson’s cross,” a block of hewn granite, 8 feet long, was discovered in the rockery of the rectory grounds, bearing an inscription in Latin and at the head the Christian symbol; from the character of the latter, Mr. Jago, of Bodmin, infers it to be of the date of the 5th or 6th century. The Countess Compton and George Sydney Strode Strode esq. J.P. of Newnham Park, Plympton St. Mary, Devon, who are owners of the manor, Commdr. Arthur Hill O. P. Hill-Lowe R.N. and the representatives of the late David William John Horndon D.L., J.P. of Pencrebar, Callington, are the chief landowners. Golberdon common of 300 acres and Redmoor common of 200 acres, are divided among 42 different owners. The soil is on the slate and trap; the subsoil is slate and trap rock. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and pasture. The area is 3,459 acres; rateable value, £3,013; the population in 1891 was 528.

The chief hamlets are MADERS, 1 ½ miles south-east; MORNICK, 1 south-west; GOLBERDON, 1 south ; and TREVIGRO, 2 south-by-east.

National School (mixed), built in 1864, and a new class room added in 1896, for 92 children; average attendance, 75.
