The town is lighted with gas by a company formed in Dec. 1892. The church of St. Blasye or Blaize is a building of granite, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave of five bays, aisles and an embattled tower containing 3 bells, dated 1693, 1740 and 1771, but all now imperfect; in the east window is a figure of St. Blaize in painted glass, preserved from the former church, and the festival of the Saint is still duly observed on February 3rd: there is a monument with genealogical inscription and a fine stained window to the Carlyons of Tregrehan, said to trace their descent from Richard I. (Cceur-de-Lion) and a monument to Henry Scobell esq. of Roselyon, first treasurer and paymaster of the farm tin to Queen Anne, and to Ann, his wife, erected in 1729; several of the windows are memorials: the church was thoroughly restored in 1839, under the direction of Messrs Scott (the late Sir G. G. Scott R.A.) and Moffatt, and has 500 sittings. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1675; and those of marriages and burials date from 1663. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £64, with residence, in the gift of G. R. G. Carlyon esq. and held since 1897 by the Rev. William Chomel Tuting M.A. of Lincoln College, Oxford. A large portion of the ecclesiastical parish of Par, formed Jan. 20, 1846. was-taken out of this parish. Here are Wesleyan, Free Methodist and Primitive Methodist chapels. A cemetery of half an acre was formed in 1862 at a cost of £250, but has no mortuary chapel; it is under the control of a Burial Board of 9 members, formed April 27th, 1893. The Town Hall, erected in 1881, is a plain building of stone, holding about 500 persons: the Old Town Hall is available for concerts &c. and will hold 1,000 people. The Working Men’s Institute, established in 1882, contains reading and recreation rooms, and has a good library; there are now (1897) over a hundred members. Here is a branch of the Cornish Bank Limited, Station road. The market, principally for the sale of meat, is held on Saturday in a space beneath the new Town Hall. Tregrehan, the seat, of George Richard Gwavas Carlyon esq. B.A., D.L., J.P. the principal landowner, is a fine mansion, chiefly in the Italian style, beautifully situated in tastefully laid out grounds, and commanding an extensive view of the sea and county; the Misses Blarney and John Blamey esq. are the holders of the manor. The soil is callous; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats, and the roots, turnips, mangolds and potatoes. The acreage is 1,797; rateable value, £7,253 ; the population in 1891 was 2,705.
