Historical Description

ST. BREOCK, or St. Breoke, is a parish bounded on the north and east by the river Camel, 7 miles northwest from Bodmin and about ¾ mile from Wadebridge station on the Great Western railway, in the Mid division of the county, hundred and petty sessional division of Pyder, St. Columb union and county court district, rural deanery of Pyder, archdeaconry of Cornwall and diocese of Truro. The town of Wadebridge extends into this parish. The church of St. Breoke is an ancient building of stone, in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, transepts, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 5 bells: there are several monuments : in the south aisle are some brass effigies, c. 1520, belonging to a memorial to the Tredeneck family of this parish, including the figure of a man in a furred robe, his two wives and seven girls: there is also a small inscribed brass to Christopher Tredeneck esq. sheriff of Cornwall 1530—1 and who died in 1531; and a brass shield, much defaced, with the arms of Tredeneck quartering other coats, and monuments to the Viel and Tyacke families: there are three memorial windows, two to the Molesworth family and one in the southern transept to the family of Prideaux-Brune: the church was restored and reseated in 1881 at a cost of £2,000, the interior portion of the roof being entirely renewed and a carved pulpit and lectern added: there are 450 sittings. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1563; marriages and burials, 1561. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £643, including 94 acres of glebe, with house, in the gift of Col. Atkinson, and held since 1896 by the Rev. Thomas Dod Sherlock M.A. of Merton College, Oxford. Here is a Bible Christian chapel, built in 1869. There are two slate quarries on the river Camel, but these are not now being worked. In this parish is the “Giant’s Quoit,” a Druidical altar, and on Hustyn Down are two barrows. Mrs. Ford, who is lady of the manor of Pawton, Charles Glynn Prideaux-Brune esq. and Messrs. Key and Cleave are the chief Landowners. The soil is clay slate; the subsoil, slate. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 7,976 acres of land and 65 of water and tidal water and 200 of foreshore; rateable value, £8,327; the population, including Wadebridge, in 1891 was 1,763.

A School Board of 9 members was formed Jan. 26, 1875, for the united district of St. Breock & Egloshayle; Walter O. Wellington, Wadebridge, clerk to the board The children of this place attend the board school at Wadebridge.
