Historical Description

ST. CLEMENT, with the hamlet of Malpas (pronounced “Mopus”), is a large parish, a portion of which is comprised within the borough of Truro: it is on the banks of the St. Clement’s Creek, 2 miles southeast of Truro, where is the nearest railway station, in the Truro division of the county, west division of the hundred of Powder, petty sessional division of Powder West, Truro union, rural deanery of Powder, archdeaconry of Cornwall and diocese of Truro. The church of St. Clement is an ancient building of stone, chiefly in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave of six bays, south aisle, north transept or Polwhele chapel of the 13th century, south porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing 4 bells : there is a monument to Rear-Admiral Robert Carthew Reynolds, of H.M.S. St. George, 98 guns, wrecked off Cape Rysenstein, on the coast of Jutland, December 24, 1811: there are a number of other memorials, all of modern date, and eleven memorial windows: in 1844, and later years, a number of ancient mural paintings were discovered ; these include on the north wall of the nave a figure of St. Christopher, and on the east splay of the aisle windows a female saint, the “Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem,” or “The Flight into Egypt,” and the “Crucifixion”: the principals of the roof are also painted: the church was restored about 1867, and has zoo sittings. East of the churchyard, near to the vicarage house, stands a very ancient monumental stone, formerly used as a gate-post to a field in this parish, and inscribed “ISNIOCVS VITALIS FILTVS TORRICI”; on the head is carved a plain Greek cross within a circle. The register dates from the year 1543. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £166, with residence and 1 ¼ acres of glebe, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1872 by the Rev. Allen Page Moor M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge and Oxon. F.R.G.S., M.R.A.S. hon. canon of Truro, and hon. fellow of St. Augustine’s College, Canterbury. A Mission church was erected at Malpas in 1883, and has sittings for 100 people; there is also a Mission church at Buckshead, seating 40 persons; a Mission room at Woodlands, with 15 sittings, and a chapel for Bible Christians in the parish. The parish Sunday school is held at St. Clement Church Town. There is a cemetery in the village a little south of the church, forming an addition to the churchyard. The charities amount to £10 yearly, distributed in bread and fuel. Pencalenick, the property and residence of Michael Henry Williams esq. D.L., J.P. is a mansion of stone, erected from designs by Mr. J. P. St. Aubyn, architect, of London, and charmingly situated on a knoll, rising steeply from the banks of the St. Clement Creek; the buildings, gardens, walks and plantations are very picturesque when viewed from the road at Merther. Penair, the residence of Addis Edward Archer esq. was formerly the seat of the Launce family, but after successive sales passed into that of Vivian; Rear-Admiral Reynolds, father of the late Admiral Sir Barrington Reynolds K.C.B. who married a sister of the late Rev. John Vivian, converted the house into a substantial mansion of freestone, as a residence for himself: from the house there is a good view of diversified country: the grounds are sheltered by extensive woodlands, and are beautifully laid out. Polwhele, the seat for many centuries of the family of that name, is the residence of Thomas Roxburgh Polwhele esq. M.A., J.P., D.L. and is about miles north-east of Truro. Bodrean, the residence of Col. Norman Burnand, is pleasantly situated about 3 ¼ miles north-north-east from Truro. Killagordan, the residence of Mrs. Tomn, is about 1 ½ miles north from Truro. Lanilly, the residence of Samuel Roberts, is about 3 miles north-north-east from Truro. Penmount is the residence of Edward Shipphard Carus-Wilson esq. M.A., J.P. Michael Henry Williams esq. who is lord of the manor, Thomas R. Polwhele esq. Arthur Champion P. Willyams esq. of Tolcarne, St. Columb and Miss Devonshire are the chief landowners. The soil is inclined to clay; subsoil, loam. The chief crops are corn, turnips and partly pasture. The acreage is 3,494; rateable value, £13,619; the population in 1891 was 3,970.

Parish Clerk, Richard Penhaligon.
