Historical Description
St. Columb is a large market and church town, in the Hundred of Pyder, 250 miles from London, very pleasantly situated on an eminence, surrounded by some fine grass land. St. Columb is a rectory, valued in Liber Regis 531. 6s. 8d. and the living is supposed to be worth nearly 10001. per annum. The parsonage is very respectable in appearance, and pleasantly situated below the town on the east side. The church is a handsome building. The town principally consists of one street, and the houses in general are well built.
Leland says, "St. Columb is a big parish and mean market town, subjoining to the lordship and patronage of the Lanhern Arrundels. The house of Lanhern in the adjoining parish of St. Mawgon, with a large scope of land was lately occupied by a few Carmelite nuns, who came over to this country in consequence of the revolution in France.
A very singular mass of rocks are justly entitled to the attention of the curious traveller, in the village of Roach, about five miles south from St. Columb. Upon the highest part of them are the remains of an hermitage or chapel, partly formed by the natural rocks themselves, and partly by stonewalls, inclosing two rooms one above the other.
ST. COLUMB MAJOR is an ancient market town and parish, on the road from Camelford to Truro, at the head of the vale of Lanherne, and is head of a union and county court district, 2 ½ miles north from St. Columb Road station on the Newquay branch of the Great Western (Cornwall Minerals) railway, 244 from London, 8 southwest from Wadebridge and 16 north-east from Truro; it is in the Mid division of the county, hundred and petty sessional division of Pydar, rural deanery of Pydar, archdeaconry of Cornwall and diocese of Truro. In 1865, under the provisions of the Local Government Act, a reservoir was constructed and water laid on throughout the town; the cost of both gas and water supply being £1,400, which sum was raised by redeemable loans charged on the rates of the district. By an order of the Local Government Board the district was in 1878 merged into the rural sanitary district of the union. The church of St. Columba is a building of Pentewan and Caen stone, in the Early Decorated and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel with aisles, transepts, nave of three bays, aisles, north and south porches, and an embattled western tower, standing on open arches, with pinnacles, and containing 8 bells: in 1676 the chancel, originally 10 feet longer, was injured by an explosion of gunpowder: the south chancel aisle was formerly a chapel, built or rebuilt before 1427, by Sir John Arundell kt. of Lanherne, and under which several members of this family are buried: in the nave floor, on the south side, is the very fine brass, one of the most elaborate and interesting in the county, originally placed in the Arundell chapel, to Sir John Arundell K.B. and kt. banneret, ob. Feb. 1545, and Elizabeth (Grey), his 1st wife, and Katherine (Grenville), his 2nd wife; the brass includes effigies of all three, and of five out of eight children; there are also six quartered shields of arms and the matrices of two others, a banner and some inscriptions ; a ribbon border of brass, with inscription now imperfect, surrounds the whole: occupying a corresponding position on the south side of the nave, on a single stone about 7 feet long, are brasses with effigies of parents and children and shields of arms to Sir John Arundell kt. ob. 17 Nov. 1590, and his wife, Anna (Stanley), ob. 22 Sept. 1602; and also to his son Sir John Arundell esq. ob. 22 July, 1633, and Anne (Jernegan), his wife: in the church is also a monument to Robert Hoblyn, author of a work on the Stannary Laws, d. 17 Nov. 1756: part of the north chancel aisle, inclosed by a carved screen, forms a vestry: the benches in the north and south aisles still retain the ancient bench ends, most of which are exquisitely carved: in 1846, during repairs, much fresco painting was discovered, and beneath the floor an altar stone, now placed on four granite shafts and re-erected in the chancel: the stone stairs to a parvise over the south porch still remain: the font, of early date, is ornamented with grotesque faces: the organ was built in 1878, at a cost of £640: there are 570 sittings: in the churchyard is a small granite cross of curious design, 3 feet in height and 2 feet 9 inches in breadth; and there is another by the south porch of more ancient date, 5 feet 6 inches high, 2 feet wide and 1 foot thick, with a nearly obliterated inscription. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1540; marriages, 1544; burials, 1539. The living is a rectory, net yearly income £1,169, including 42 acres of glebe, four glebe houses and parsonage house, in the gift of and held since 1897 by the Rev. Edmund Joseph Walker M.A. of Trinity coll. Cambs. The Mission church, at Indian Queens, is a building of stone, erected in 1884, at a cost of £400, and has 120 sittings. The Congregational chapel, Fore street, a building of stone, erected in 1790, and enlarged at various times, will seat 350 persons. The Bible Christian chapel, Fore street, built in 1801, is an edifice of stone, with sittings for about 250 persons; there is also a small chapel belonging to the same denomination at Talskiddy, and another at Black Cross. The Free Methodist chapel, Fore street, erected in 1876, at a cost of £1,000, is a building of stone in the Gothic style, seating 250 persons, with a Sunday school attached. The Wesleyan chapel, Fore street, is a building of stone in the Gothic style, erected in 1868, at a cost of £2,000, and will seat 500 persons; the basement is used as a Sunday school: there is also a Wesleyan chapel at Indian Queens, erected in 1887, at a cost of over £700, and seating 300 persons, and a third at Trebudannon. The parish churchyard was closed for interments in 1856, by Order in Council. The cemetery, formed about 1856, at a cost of £1,200, and enlarged in 1878, is now in the hands of the Parish Council; it comprises 2 ½ acres of land, about half a mile southwest from the town, originally purchased and laid out by the late Burial Board, who also erected two mortuary chapels. The Town Hall, a building of stone, with a basement, used as a meat market, was erected in 1848; the petty sessions and county court are held here, and it is besides used for other public purposes. There is a Mechanics’ Institution and news room, with Temperance hall, built in 1874. The Constitutional Club, in Fore street, has 110 members, and the Liberal Club, in Union square, 92 members. The town is the centre of a large agricultural district, and on market days the sale of cereals and other produce is considerable. A charter for a market here was granted to John Arundel] by Edward III. in 1333, at Berwick-on-Tweed, for his services on the occasion of an invasion into Scotland. The market day is on Thursday. The cattle markets are held on the third Monday in every month, except March and November, when fairs are held in lieu thereof on the first Thursday after Mid-Lent Sunday and the first Thursday after the 12th November. Jenkyns’ charity, of £200, given by James Jenkyns in 1628, and now realizing £60 10s. yearly, is for distribution in money and is vested in the hands of 12 trustees, being landowners resident in the parish; the treasurer for the time being has the care of the “Green Book,” a well-preserved volume, containing interesting entries relating to parochial matters from 1585; there is a reference in it to an older register not now in existence. A parish nurse was established here in 1887, and works under the direction of a committee of ladies. About two miles south-east from the town stands Castle-an-Dinas, a large and nearly circular British or Danish encampment, consisting of a double vallum, with an inner area of about 1,700 by 1,500 feet; the circumference of the outer circle being about 964 paces and that of the inner about 750 paces: Castle-an-Dinas, which may be rendered “the castle on the fortified headland,” is the property of H.R.H. the Duke of Cornwall K.G. On the downs, about two miles from St. Columb; towards Wadebridge, are nine stones placed in a straight line, and known by the name of “the Nine Maidens,” seven of them being still erect; the highest stands about 8 feet out of the ground; these are now the property of Henry Jenkin Rowse esq. of Carworgey. The ancient and exciting game of) hurling with a silver ball is still, practised here on Shrove Tuesday and the Saturday week following in every year. The parish feast is held on the nearest Sunday to the 17th November. Here are the head quarters of the G Company 2nd Volunteer Battalion of the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry. On an eminence north of the town is Trewan, an embattled structure of the 15th century, with a granite entrance hall of Elizabethan date; the house was restored and enlarged by the late Richard Henry S.
