Civil & Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction
Historical Description
ST. DAY, or St. Dye, is a town and ecclesiastical parish, formed August 14, 1835, from the civil parish of Gwennap, and is 1 ¾ miles south from Scorriergate station on the West Cornwall section of the Great Western railway and about 2 miles north-by-east of Redruth; it is in the North Western division of the county, hundred of Kerrier, petty sessional division of Kerrier East, Redruth union and county court district, rural deanery of Carnmarth, archdeaconry of Cornwall and diocese of Truro. The church of the Holy Trinity is a large building of granite in the Gothic style, consecrated in 1828, and consists of nave with eastern apse, aisles and a western tower with pinnacles and a small spire: in the apse are three stained windows, one of which is a memorial to the late Sir William Williams bart. of Treguliow, d. 24 March, 1870, and another to Mrs. Buller; there is also a memorial window to Caroline (Eales), widow of Sir William Williams bart. d. 17 Feb. 1886, placed by her grandson, Michael Williams esq. : the organ was erected in 1859, at a cost of 200 guineas, and enlarged in 1880: the church was restored in 1891, and affords sittings for 1,200 people. The register dates from the year 1833. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £227, with residence, in the gift of the vicar of Gwennap, and held since 1891 by the Rev. John James Murley. On what is called the “Gorland” there formerly stood a church, of which no traces now remain in situ, but some fragments of pillars and 2 crosses are to be seen in the grounds of Tregullow House. There are Primitive Methodist and Wesleyan chapels. The Market House, in the centre of the town, is a partially covered building and has a lofty tower containing a clock: the market day is Saturday. The soil is partly granite and killas. The population in 1891 was 2,292, including the rural parts of the parish, the names of the inhabitants of which are given with Gwennap.
Schools
A Church school room was built in 1893 by J. Passmore Edwards esq. of London, in memory of his late uncle, Mr. John Edwards, &; opened by the donor, 6 May, 1893.
Board School (boys, girls & infants), built in 1878, under the Gwennap school board, for 440 children; average attendance, no boys, no girls & 130 infants.
