Historical Description

ST. DENNIS, in Domesday Lan-Dines (the church of the hill), is a township and parish, bounded on the north-west by the river Fal and containing several small villages and hamlets; it is 3 miles east-south-east from St. Columb Road station on the Newquay branch of the Great Western railway, 5 miles north-by-west from Burngullow station on the Great Western railway and 7 north-west from St. Austell, in the Mid division of the county, eastern division of the hundred of Powder, petty sessional division of Powder East, St. Austell union and county court district, rural deanery of St. Austell, archdeaconry of Cornwall and diocese of Truro. St. Dennis Junction Mineral station is 1 ¾ miles west from St. Dennis. The Fowey and Newquay lines of railway pass through the parish. The church of St. Dennis, situated on a conical hill, in the midst of an old entrenchment, near the gorse moors, and protected on the north by a plantation of firs, was rebuilt in 1847, and is a plain but substantial building of native porcelain stone, rectangular in plan, with a semi-hexagonal roof and an embattled western tower of two stages, with short pinnacles and containing 3 bells, of which the treble and tenor are dated 1651 and 1738; the second bell is dated 1167: near the south porch is an ancient granite cross, about six feet high: the porch, which has been modernized, and the tower, are all that remain of the old church, which consisted of two aisles and a north transept, and contained a reputed Saxon font: the arcade, removed to Nanpean, in the parish of St. Stephen’s in Brannell, in 1847, has been incorporated in a new church at that place: St. Dennis churchyard was inclosed by a wall in 1826, its boundary having previously been marked by a trench only: there are 340 sittings. The register dates from 1687. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £150, with residence and 4 acres of glebe, in the gift of John Bevill Fortescue esq. and held since 1852 by the Rev. John Glynn Childs B.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. There is a Free Methodist chapel, enlarged in 1892, at a cost of £195, and a Bible Christian chapel, to which a new schoolroom was added in 1893, at a cost of about £300. There are also Bible Christian chapels at Whitemoor and Enniscaven. The St. Dennis Reading Room and Recreation Society was established in 1892. The feast of St. Dennis is celebrated annually on October 9th, if it fall on a Sunday; if not, on the Sunday following. In this and the adjoining parish of St. Stephen’s are some of the largest clay works in the county: china-stone is also dug out in great abundance, and large quantities of china-clay and porcelain-stone are dispatched by the Quay tramway. Viscount Falmouth, who is lord of the manor, Messrs. Gill and Ivimey, of London, and the Hawkey trustees, are the principal landowners. The soil is clay; subsoil, disintegrated granite. The land is principally pasturage. The acreage is 3,230, but the rated area is 1,966, remainder uncultivated; rateable value, £8,891; the population in 1891 was 1,302.

TRELAVER, a quarter of a mile south, and HENDRA, half a mile south, are villages; ENNISCAVEN is another village, 1 mile north-east.

Church of England School (mixed), for 191 children; average attendance, 191.
