Historical Description

ST. ENDELLION is a township and parish, 2 miles from Port Isaac Road station on the London and South Western railway, 5 ½ north from Wadebridge station on the Great Western railway, 6 miles north-east from Padstow and 10 south-west from Camelford, in the North Eastern division of the county, hundred and petty sessional division of Trigg, union of Bodmin, county court district of Camelford, rural deanery and archdeaconry of Bodmin and diocese of Truro. The collegiate church of St. Endelienta, standing on high ground, is a building of Lundy Island granite and stone, in the Perpendicular style, and consists of chancel, nave of five bays, aisles, south porch and an embatled western tower with pinnacles, containing 6 bells, all re-cast in 1734: in the nave are some good carved bench ends, displaying the emblems of the Passion, and the arms of Grenville and Roscarrock: the north aisle retains an aumbrey, and in the north wall is a newell staircase: in the south aisle is a piscina, and in the porch a stoup, with the shields of Cheynduit and Trevenor above, and in front a demi-angel holding a shield with the arms of Roscarrock : the font is a plain ovoid basin on a cylindrical shaft and octagonal base: in the north-east angle of the chancel is a large altar tomb, on the upper slab of which are the matrices of brasses : in the south aisle is another altar tomb, the sides of which exhibit deeply recessed arches, with ogee heads, and a banding of quatrefoils along the base; it has no inscription: there are a few mural tablets, including one to Jabez Roscarrock, 1582, and others to the Philp family; and there are also several inscribed floor stones dating from 1700: the church was restored in 1876—7, and again in 1887, at a total cost of £558, and has 170 sittings. On the south side of the church is a sundial. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1732; marriages, 1735 ; burials, 1738. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £162, including 27 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1879 by the Rev. Reginald Heber Treffry M.A. of Lincoln College, Oxford: attached to this church are three sinecure prebends, that of Bodmin or the King’s, net yearly value, £102, with 16 acres of glebe; Trehaverock, £104 net, with 21 acres; and Mornays, £100 net, with 22 acres, now held respectively by the Rev. A. L. Palmes M.A. vicar of St. Mary Dover, the Rev. R. H. Treffry M.A. rector, and the Rev. J. J. G. Every B.A. vicar of Lanhydrock. At TRELIGHTS is a Bible Christian chapel, erected about 1837, with 80 sittings, and a Free Methodist chapel, built in 1887, with 100 sittings. Roscarrock, from the time of Richard I. up to 1673, was the seat of the ancient family of that name, who also held a moiety of the manor of Bodanan, long the chief seat of the Chenduit family; the manor of Roscarrock is now held by Mrs. Lean, of Falmouth, and that of Bodanan by the Lyne family; the manor of Trefreake, sometime belonging to the Roscarrocks, was lately in the Peter and Cardell families ; Earl Fortescue is lord of the manor of Trevre : the barton of Tresungar gave rise to an ancient family of that name, who resided here in the 15th and 16th centuries; the house, now attached to a farm, is a long building, with a gabled wing and mullioned windows, and has an embattled entrance tower of three stories, bearing the date 1660, when the whole was rebuilt by John Mathew esq.; fragments of earlier work may be seen built into a cart shed. On a high cliff at Doydon Head, near Port Quin, stands a square monolith known as “Long Cross,” originally the shaft of a cross ; it is about 4 feet 3 inches high, and bears on one face a partly effaced inscription, of which only the words “BROEGAN H[IC] IACIT ’’ can be clearly made out; these are conjectured to refer to Brechan, a Welsh prince and father of St. Endelienta: in the garden of Tresungar House is the head of another cross, with cylindrical arms: off Port Gaverne is “Chapel Rock,” and the headland here has an entrenchment of uncertain date: some ancient roads traverse the parish. The principal landowners are Lord Robartes, Earl Fortescue, Mrs. Lean, James Hill esq. and Charles Menheniek esq. The soil is light; subsoil, rock. The chief crops are barley, wheat and roots. The area is 3,729 acres; rateable value, £4,921 ; the population in 1891 was 1,168,874 being in Port Isaac.
