Historical Description

A great trade is carried on at Hayle in the Parish of St. Erth, a very small town, situated on the eastern side of the river of the same name, in iron, limestone, Bristol-wares, and Welch coal for the steam-engines and smelting-houses. The country immediately about Hayle is exceedingly rocky and mountainous. The operation of smelting the ores, and rolling the metal, is brought to great perfection at the works erected here: they have, however, a very terrible effect on the constitution of the workmen employed in them. "Nothing," says Dr. Maton, "can be more shocking than the appearance which the workmen in the smelting-houses exhibit. Some of the poor wretches who where lading the liquid metal from the furnaces to the moulds looked more like walking corpses than living beings.'' The disengaged arsenic in the immediate vicinity of the copper-houses, has also a very uncommon effect upon the horses employed here; which, after two or three years, lose their hoofs.

On the western side of Hayle Harbour, about two miles from St. Ives, is Trevethoe, the seat of W. Praed, Esq.; the house and grounds are very beautifully situated.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

ST. ERTH is a parish and village on the Hayle river and estuary, with a station on the Great Western railway, 2 miles south from Hayle, 7 north-east from Penzance and 322 ½ from London, in the Western division of the county, Penwith hundred, petty sessional division of Penwith East, Penzance union and county court district, rural deanery of Penwith, archdeaconry of Cornwall and diocese of Truro. A portion of the town of Hayle is in this parish. The river is here crossed by an ancient bridge. The church of St. Erth, dating from about the 15th century, is a building of stone, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower 54 feet high, with pinnacles, and containing 3 bells, the treble and tenor dated 1783 and the second 1820: a curious feature of the building is that the arcades of six bays which divide the nave and aisles rise gradually from the west end, suggesting that the original floor was laid in steps : the stained east window is a memorial to Lawrence H. O. Woodd; and in the south aisle is a memorial window to the Rev. Alfred Wilson Mills M.A. vicar 1864—86, presented by the parishioners in 1886: in the north aisle portions of the old carved oak beams remain: the monuments, all of modern date, are both numerous and costly: in 1873—4 the church was almost entirely rebuilt on the old lines as far as possible with the old materials ; the chancel repaired, a new organ erected and the church re-seated throughout at a total cost of £3,000: there are sittings for 306 persons: the churchyard has been enlarged ; within it, and near a flight of steps, stands the head of an ancient cross, elegantly carved as a quatrefoiled rose, with five large bosses, and four smaller ones between the leaves. In the village stands another cross, about 6 feet high. The register dates from the year 1563. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £290, with residence and 105 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Truro, and held since 1886 by the Rev. Conway Richard Dobbs Carter M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. There is a Mission chapel on the Bosworgy estate, where services are held by the vicar, and there is also a Wesleyan chapel and a mixed school in connection therewith. In the church town is a cross, 7 feet 2 inches high, and' a foot and a half wide, with a square head, carved on one side with a representation of the “Crucifixion” and on the other with a Greek cross. Trewinnard, the Trewindoi of Domesday, is the principal place in this parish: the house has been greatly altered, but still contains the old state coach (the first of its kind introduced into Cornwall) of Sir Christopher Hawkins bart. F.R.S., F.S.A., d. April 6, 1829, when this title became extinct; about half a mile from St. Erth bridge, on the summit of a hill, is a Roman entrenchment. The poor have £1 5s. yearly, distributed in bread. Francis Rashleigh Rodd esq. of Trebartha hall, North Hill, who is lord of the manor, the Duke of Leeds, Lord St. Levan, the Rev. St. Aubyn Hender Molesworth-St. Aubyn M.A. of Clowance, Crowan, and Lady Molesworth are the chief landowners. The soil is various; the subsoil is killas and ironstone: there is a stratum of sand, used by iron founders in moulding. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and green crops. The acreage is 4,0912; rateable value, £7,677; the population in 1891 was 1,985.
