Historical Description
ST. EVAL is a scattered parish on the coast, 8 miles north-west from St. Columb Road station on the Newquay branch of the Great Western railway, 5 north-west from St. Columb Major and 6 south-south-west from Padstow, in the Mid division of the county, hundred and petty sessional division of Pydar, St. Columb union and county court district, rural deanery of Pydar, archdeaconry of Cornwall and diocese of Truro. The church of St. Eval, or Uval, is an ancient building chiefly in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave of five bays, north transept, south aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, in the Perpendicular style, containing 5 bells, rehung, and two were re-cast, in 1892, at a cost of £77, by Mr. William Aggett, of Chagford: the tower, having fallen down, was rebuilt in 1727, at an expense of £400, partly raised by subscription among the Bristol merchants, to whose shipping it served as a land-mark before the erection in 1847 of the Trevose lighthouse: there are remains of a hagioscope and rood loft, and a curious small arch between the first and second bays of the main arcade, probably over a founder’s tomb: there are monuments to the family of Leach, 1672—1709; William Trevethick M.A. 1692—3, and Charity, his wife, 1688, besides some modern memorials: the ancient bench ends, some of which date from the 15th century and bear the emblems of the Passion, the royal arms of Henry VI. and other subjects, are carefully preserved: during some alterations a window of presumed Saxon date was discovered in the north wall: over the south porch is a sundial inscribed “We shall Die All”: the church was completely restored in 1889 under the care of Mr. John D. Sedding, architect, of London, at a cost of £1,071, £400 of which was given by J. C. Williams esq. of St. Austell, when the church was re-seated, and now affords 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1695. The living is a vicarage, net income £155, including 40 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Truro, and held since 1886 by the Rev. John Lock. The vicarage house was restored during the incumbency of the Rev. J. Ellis, who died in 1880. Here is a Free Methodist chapel. The far-famed Bedruthan Steps, consisting of several distinct tiers of rocks, rising perpendicularly from the sea, are in this parish; the “Voga,” or “Fogou,” is a subterranean chamber or cavern, within a triple entrenchment, in a secluded valley near Porthcothan, on the estate called “Trewoofe” or “Troove”; the cavern is 36 feet in length and about 6 feet high, the breadth being about 5 feet; the sides are lined with rough stones, simply piled up, and the roof consists of stone slabs; from this chamber a passage leads to another similarly constructed: the cave is said to have on one occasion afforded shelter to a party of Royalists when pursued by the troopers of Sir Thomas Fairfax: there are also here several tumuli, besides an ancient British encampment called “Red Cliff Castle.” On the sea coast, near Bedruthan steps, are several other remarkable caverns. Among the immense rocks is one which resembles a lady wearing a crown, and having on a full and flowing costume; it is fancifully said to be a likeness of Queen Elizabeth. The manor of Trethewell, now belonging to the Spry family, supplied a high sheriff to the county at least six times, from John Manfan esq. in 1428 to 1489: the old manor house has disappeared, but the manorial mell still exists. Edward William Brydges Willvams esq. of Carnanton, Mawgan-in-Pydar, is the principal landowner. The soil is of various kinds; the subsoil is, in some places, a rough stony clay and in others slate. The chief crops, are wheat, barley and oats. The acreage is 2,875; rateable value, £2,336; the population in 1891 was 245.
