Historical Description
ST. EWE is a parish on the river Tusey and containing many hamlets and detached residences; it is 6 miles south-west from St. Austell, where is the nearest railway station, and 3 west-north-west from Mevagissey, in the Mid division of the county, western division of the hundred of Powder, petty sessional division of Powder East, St. Austell union and county court district, rural deanery of St. Austell, archdeaconry of Cornwall and diocese of Truro. The church of All Saints, or St. Ewes, or S. Tues, is an ancient building of Pentewan stone in the Early Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle, north transept, or Treganan aisle, north and south porches, and a tower of two stages, with spire, and containing 3 bells, two dated 1684, and the tenor 1826: there are monuments to the Mohun, Seymour and Scobell families, and to John Williams Hope esq. late of Amsterdam in this county: the east window is a memorial to Frederick Stephens esq. of Hembal, erected by his widow; and in the south aisle are memorial windows to Harriet, wife of Francis Hicks esq. late of Plymouth, and to Perys Edmund Tremayne, of Heligan, inserted by his parents: the north-east window in the chancel is a memorial to the Rev. Thomas John Trevenen, 28 years rector of the parish, who died in 1864, erected by his surviving children: the church was restored in 1881 at a cost of upwards of £2,000: the original rood screen, a very fine specimen of Decorated Gothic work, and elaborately carved, has been restored by Harry Hems, of Exeter, and replaced on its ancient site: there are 300 sittings: in 1887 the churchyard was enlarged by the addition of a quarter of an acre of ground fenced in by a wall, at a cost of £65, given by the landowners. The register of baptisms and marriages dates from the year 1560; of births from 1653, and of burials from 1559. The living is a rectory, net income £384, including 100 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Sir C. B. Graves-Sawle bart. of Penrice, and George R. G. Carlyon esq. of Tregrehan, jointly, and held since 1896 by the Rev. John Kendall Rashleigh M.A. of Magdalene College, Cambridge. There are three Bible Christian chapels in the parish, one at Polmassick, seating about 60 persons, another at Paramore, with about 200 sittings, and a third at Kestle. In the parish stands a portion of an ancient cross, consisting of two broad square steps and a pedestal. The charities amount to £4 3s. 6d. yearly, which is distributed every Easter Monday, and there are four almshouses, founded by the Tremayne family. Fairs were formerly held here on the second Monday in April and October, but are now abolished. Heligan, first built by William Tremayne esq. in 1604, and considerably altered about 1810, by the Rev. H. H. Tremayne, is the seat of John Tremayne esq. B.A., D.L., J.P.; it is about 5 miles souht-west from St. Austell, and is surrounded by extensive grounds very tastefully laid out, with a lodge at each entrance. The Earl of Mount Edgcumbe L.L. is the chief landowner; the lords of the chief manors, J. Tremayne esq. Christopher Henry Thomas Hawkins esq. of Trewithan Probus, Richard Carlyon Coode esq. of Moor Cottage, St. Austell, George A. Carlyon and John Charles Williams esq. of Caerhayes Castle, are the other principal landowners. The soil is rich loam; subsoil, slate. The crops are wheat and barley, with roots. The acreage is 5,749; rateable value, £5,780; the population in 1891 was 998.
