Historical Description

ST. GENNYS is a parish on the north coast of Cornwall, 5 miles north-west from Otterham station on the London and South Western railway, 16 north-east from Launceston station on the Great Western and London and South Western railways, 11 ½ south-south-west from Stratton, 12 south-west from Bude, 10 north from Camelford and 7 north-east from Boscastle, in the North Eastern division of the county, hundred and petty sessional division of Lesnewth, Stratton union, county court district of Camelford, rural deanery of Stratton, archdeaconry of Bodmin and diocese of Truro. The parish consists wholly of lofty hills and deep valleys, and its scenery generally is highly romantic and picturesque. The church of St. Genesius is an ancient building of stone, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, aisles, south porch and a low western tower, 22 feet high, with a pyramidal roof 10 feet in height, and containing 4 bells, all cast in 1791: there are numerous memorials of the 17th and 18th centuries, and in the churchyard a tomb of granite to Benet Mil, ob. 1593, and Christopher Bligh: the church was restored in 1871, under the direction of Mr. J. P. St. Aubyn, architect, at an expense of £1,100, when it was reseated and a vestry added: there are 280 sittings. The register dates from the year 1702. The living is a vicarage, net income £109, including 27 acres of glebe with residence, in the gift of the Earl of St. Germans, and held since 1862 by the Rev. Charles Harry Walker M.A. of Worcester College, Oxford. Here is a chapel for United Methodists, built in 1842, and one for Bible Christians, built about 1863. The manorial rights are divided. Lieut.-General Charles Batchelor, Sir George-Stucley Stucley bart. H.R.H. the Duke of Cornwall K.G. John Cock Jewell esq. of Saltash, Mr. J. J. Smeeth, Mr. Humphrey Smeeth, and Mrs. G. Bake, of Lanteglos-by-Camelford, are the chief landowners. The Cambeak, Dizzard point and Castle point are three headlands on the coast in this parish; High Cliff, near Crackington haven, is 735 feet above the sea level, and Dizzard head, 500 feet. The soil is clayey; subsoil is slate. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and roots. The area is 5,580 acres (including 30 of water); rateable value, £2,850; the population in 1891 was 430.

The following are hamlets, with their distances from the church:-ROSOARE, 1 ½ miles south-east; TRENCRICK, 2 ½ miles east; COXFORD, half a mile east; CRACKINGTON HAVEN, three-quarters of a mile south-west; DIZZARD, 2 miles north-east; SWEETS, 1 ½ miles south; HILL, 2 miles south; PENKUKE, 2 miles south-east.

A School Board of 5 members was formed Nov. 14, 1874; W. Tinney, Bay park, clerk to the board & attendance officer.

Board School, built in 1876, for 80 children ; average attendance, 55.
