The church of St. Hilary, situated on an eminence, and rebuilt in 1853, is an edifice of granite, in the Decorated style, from designs by Mr. W. White, architect, and consists of chancel, with aisles and arcades of three arches, nave of four bays, quasitransepts, aisles, south porch and a western tower with spire, 78 feet high, and containing 3 bells, two dated 1674 and one dated 1804: the previous church, erected in the reign of Henry VII. in the Perpendicular style, was destroyed by fire on the night of Good Friday, 1853, the small tower which originally belonged to a cruciform church of the reign of Edward III. alone escaping: two inscribed stones then found in the old walls are now placed near the south entrance; one of these, though much worn, is believed to read thus:-“Imp. Caes. Flav. Val. Constantino Pio. Nob. Caes. Divi. Constantini Pii. Avg. Filio” : in 1863 a memorial window was erected in the south aisle to John Maughan Connell, buried at Montmartre, Paris, 16 Sept. 1845 : in 1891 a memorial east window was erected to the Rev. Sampson Kingsford M.A. for 20 years vicar of this parish (1870—90): there are 450 sittings: the church-yard is exceptionally distinguished by its numerous and costly tombs and monuments, including one to the family of Davies, 1699, and others of modern date to those of Penneck, Blewett, Cole, Maugham, Millett and others: interments have ceased, except under certain conditions. The register dates from the year 1692, and up to May 9th, 1893, included the register of Marazion, but since that date the latter has been kept separately. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £291, with 38 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Duke of Leeds and Gen. the Right Hon. Sir Redvers Henry Buller P.C., K.C.M.G. and held since 1890 by the Rev. William Henry Hughes, of Queen’s College, Birmingham, and domestic chaplain to Lord St. Levan. The rectorial tithe rent-charge is now in the hands of 25 lay impropriators. There are Wesleyan chapels at Halmanning and Penburthey Cross, and one at Relubbus, erected in 1875, besides a chapel for Bible Christians on Rosudgeon Downs. A new cemetery, in connection with the church, was laid out in 1893. Christopher Henry Thomas Hawkins esq. of Trewithen Probus, who is lord of the manor, the Duke of Leeds, Lord St. Levan, and Gen. the Right Hon. Sir Redvers Henry Buller P.C., K.C.M.G., G.C.B., V.C. of Downes, Crediton, Devon, are the principal landowners. The soil is stiff clay; subsoil, killas. The chief crops are wheat, turnips and broccoli. The area is 2,786 acres; rateable value, £3,817; the population in 1891 was 956.

PRUSSIA COVE, 2 ½ miles south-south-east, is a pleasant watering place in this parish; HIGHER DOWNS, half mile south-east; LOWER DOWNS, 1 south; ROSUDGEON, 2 south; and TRENALLS, 1 ½ southeast, are hamlets, and RELUBBUS, 1 east-north-east, a small village.
