Historical Description
ST. IVE (locally pronounced St. Eve) is a parish and village, on the high road from Callington to Liskeard and Bodmin, between the rivers Lynher and Tidi, 4 ½ miles north-east from Liskeard, and 5 north-east from Menheniot station on the Great Western railway, in the North Eastern division of the county, middle division of the hundred of East, petty sessional division of East Middle, Liskeard union and county court district, rural deanery of East, archdeaconry of Bodmin and diocese of Truro. The church of St. Ivo is a building of stone and grey granite, in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave of five bays, south aisle, north transept, massive south porch and a western granite tower, with a cluster of three pinnacles at each angle, and containing 5 bells, dated respectively 1844, 1775, 1827, 1806, 1790 and 1754: some of the old 14th century work at the east end is particularly fine, and the east window is a beautiful work of the Decorated period and has an elaborately carved niche on either side: there are also three fine sedilia of the Decorated period and a piscina, and in the transept is another piscina and a hagioscope: on the north side of the chancel is an arched recess, and there are two memorial windows and a large monument to John Wrey and his wife, dated 1597: the pulpit, made in 1700, is profusely ornamented with debased carving, and there is a carved oak lectern: there are memorials to the families of Dodson, 1669—1712; Saltren, 1695—1746; and Helyar, 1806—26; and to Blaunch Wrey, ob. 1595; John Wrey esq. ob. 1597; John Deminoe, ob. 1680; John Lyne, 37 years rector, ob. 1791; and others of his family: in the south porch is a holy water stoup: the sun dial on the porch is inscribed “Quotidie Morior, 1695”: the church was restored and reseated in oak in 1883—4, under the direction of Mr. R. Medley Fulford F.R.I.B.A. at a cost of £1,089, and has 270 sittings. The register dates from the year 1685. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £349, including 80 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Crown, and held since 1896 by the Rev. Charles John Coar M.A. of Baliol College, Oxford. There is a Wesleyan chapel in the village and one at Marsh gate, and also a Wesleyan Reform chapel. The charities amount to £15 yearly value. In the south-east corner of this parish is a curious isolated hill, washed at its base on two sides by the river Lynher; on its summit is an ancient encampment, probably British, called “Cadson Bury”; and at Tokenbury is another small encampment. At Trebigh was anciently a preceptory of Knights Templars, founded about 1150 by H. de Pomeroy and Reginald Marsh; its possessions were valued at £81. The Glasgow Caradon copper mine, in this parish, is now (1897) unworked. Sir Henry Bourchier Toke Wrey bart. who is lord of the manor, Earl Compton M.P. Digby Collins esq. of Newton Ferrers, William Coryton esq. of Pentillie Castle, Pillaton, David William John Horndon esq. of Pencrebar, Callington, George Sydney Strode Strode esq. of Newnham Park, Plympton, Devon, and William Pollard esq. of Woolston, are the chief landowners. The soil is free and light clay; subsoil, clay slate. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley and turnips. The area is 5,780 acres; rateable value, £5,010; the population in 1891 was 1,716.
