Historical Description
ST. KEW, anciently called “Lanehoc” and “Lanho,” is a township and parish on the river Amble, 4 miles north-north-east from Wadebridge station on the Great Western railway, 1 ½ north-west from St. Kew Highway station on the London and South Western railway, 3 south-west from Port Isaac Road station on the same line, 7 ½ east via Rock Ferry from Padstow, 8 south west from Camelford and 8 north-west from Bodmin, in the North Eastern division of the county, hundred and petty sessional division of Trigg, Bodmin union, Camelford county court district, rural deanery and archdeaconry of Bodmin and diocese of Truro. The church of St. Kewa, situated in a valley, is a building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave of five bays, aisles with eastern chapels, south porch and a fine embattled western tower, with crocketed pinnacles, containing 6 bells, recast in 1818 by Rudhall, of Gloucester, from a previous peal of 4, since which the 3rd and tenor have been again recast: the chancel, which has been extended so as to inclose the eastern bay of the nave, retains a piscina and credence, and a priests' doorway: the east window of the north chapel contains ancient glass, including scenes from the life of Christ, the royal arms of the Tudors, and those of the Kingdon and Carminowe families: in the north aisle is a newel staircase formerly leading to the rood loft: both windows in the south chapel contain old glass, including a shield of the arms of Arundell, and in the south wall is a piscina: the memorials in the church comprise a stone with arms and inscription to Thomas Treffry esq. of Fowey, ob. 28th January, 1590, and a number of other members of his family to 1775 ; and there are others (some bearing arms) to Honor (Calwodley), wife of John Webber, ob. 6th October, 1601; John Cavell esq. ob. 10th January, 1602; Thomas Hutton B.D. vicar (1606—40), ob. 20th December, 1639—40; Robert Bellmain M.A. vicar (1640), ob. April, 1640, and Philippa (Hutton), his wife, ob. February, 1640: in the south chapel is a slate slab of the 16th century, with a large incised cross and a mutilated inscription in Latin to William Carnsuysuwe, and another with the date 1634, and there are many modern monuments : the communion plate includes a chalice with rim of silver gilt, dating from 1578, a chalice given by Mary Nicholls, who died 19 January, 1723; silver gilt flagon given by Elizabeth Nicholls in 1729; silver gilt paten given by the same in 1732; and silver gilt alms dish, given by Mrs. Mary Webber, who died 19th October, 1763: on the exterior south wall is a sun-dial: the church was restored and reseated in oak, and a chancel screen of oak erected in 1883, at a total cost of £2,000: there are 500 sittings. The register dates from the year 1564. The living is a vicarage, net income £219, including 33 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Rev. John James Glencross Every B.A. vicar of Lanhydrock, and held since 1850 by the Rev. Nicholas Thomas Every B.A. of Clare College, Cambridge. In the 14th century there was a chapel in the churchyard, kept in repair by the prior of Plympton, and in the parish was also another chapel, dedicated to St. Wenne, the site of which is uncertain; no traces of either now exist. There are five Free Methodist chapels, viz. :-at Amble, erected in 1840, and seating 150; at Trelill, built in 1812, with 130 sittings; at Pendoggett, built in 1896, with 120 sittings; at St. Kew highway, built in 1840, with 120 sittings, and one at Trequite, seating 80 persons. The charities include £20 left by Degory Dagge by will, dated 8th October, 1622, the interest to be divided amongst the poor; and £100 left by Mrs. Diana Nation, widow, by will dated 12th January, 1775, for the same purpose. There are also other benefactions by John Dagge in 1594, and William Inch in 1635, for the repair of the church and the relief of the poor. On the highland on the north side of the parish is Tregeare castle, an ancient earthwork, consisting of two circular ramparts with deep ditches and an entrance on the south-east, and on Trevinnick farm is a quadrangular earthwork, about 100 yards square, near which fragments of weapons have been ploughed up; on the by road leading to Polrode mill, and now serving as a stepping stone over a small watercourse, is an ancient round-headed cross, 5 feet 5 inches in length. The farm house of Trewane, an interesting old mansion with mullioned windows, contains in one of the rooms a representation in plaster relief of the “Offering up of Isaac,” with two rhyming lines; and in other rooms are the arms of the Nicoll or Nicholls family, who held this estate from the 16th to the 18th century. Tretawn farm house, probably erected by the Molesworths, is a building of Jacobean date, and a block of granite in the wall near one of the fireplaces has the inscription:-“Phila. Molesworth, 1620.” Mrs. Richard Ford, of Pencarrow (sister of, and heiress to, the late Sir William Molesworth), who is lady of the manor, John Bevill Fortescue esq. of Boconnoc, and Lord Robartes, are the chief landowners. The soil is stiff clay; subsoil, slate. The crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 7,550 acres of land and 15 of water; rateable value, £7,573; the population in 1891 was 1,043.
HIGHWAY, 1 ¼ miles south-east, and situated on the road from Wadebridge to Camelford; PENDOGGET, 1 ½ north; TREGELLES, ½ north-west; TRELILL,1 ½ north-east, and TREQUITE, ½ east, are places in this parish.
