Historical Description
MAWGAN-IN-MENEAGE is a parish on the river Hel, 4. miles east-south-east from Helston station on a branch of the Great Western railway, in the Truro division of the county, hundred of Kerrier, petty sessional division of Kerrier West, Helston union and county court district, rural deanery of Kerrier, archdeaconry of Cornwall and diocese of Truro. The church of St. Mawgan is an interesting building of granite dating from the 13th century, in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave of six bays, north aisle with shallow transept, south transept, or Carminow aisle, south porch and a battlemented western tower with very fine pinnacles and containing 3 bells, dated respectively 1827, 1868 and 1834: at the east end of the north aisle is the vault of the Vyvyan family, and over it is the tomb of Sir Richard Vyvyan knight and bart. ob. 3rd October, 1665, whose sword and helmet are preserved in the church : in the south transept is a low arched recess, inclosing the recumbent effigies, in freestone, of a cross-legged knight and a lady ; the knightly figure, from the “bend” on the shield, is assumed to represent a member of the Carminow family, one of whom, Ralph Carminow, in the reign of Richard II. (1385—8) claimed the arms, “azure, a bend or,” against Lords Scrope and Grosvenor: in 1865, on the rebuilding of the wall, a grave four feet deep was met with, forming part of the wall and containing human remains and some relics : the south transept has a hagioscope : in the churchyard is a sun dial, with the date 1695: there are many monuments to the Vyvyan family, baronets, 1665—1841, and various others of modern date: the church was thoroughly restored in 1894—5, at a cost, including gifts from various donors, of about £1,800, under the direction of Mr. Edmund Sedding, architect, of Plymouth: during the progress of the work two 14th cent, lancet windows and a 15th cent, window were discovered, and within the porch a 13th cent, stoup in good condition; the rood loft stair has been opened, and also the passage-way in the spandrels of the arcade: two stained windows have been presented by Miss Charlotte Vyvyan, and Mrs. H. L. Wright : the church has 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1678. The living is a rectory, with that of St. Martin’s annexed, joint net yearly value £504, with residence and 20 acres of glebe, in disputed patronage, but held since 1889 by the Rev. Patrick Morrison Flinn B.A. of Trinity College, Dublin, who is non-resident; the Rev. Herbert Langston Wright B.A. of Pembroke Collece, Cambridge, has been curate in charge since 1891. At Garras is a United Free Methodist chapel and a Wesleyan chapel, sealing 100 persons. Near the church, on the side of the road leading to Helston, stands Mawgan Cross, of which only the shaft now remains, with faint traces of an inscription, apparently “Onegumi fil. Enans”; it is supposed to be at least 900 years old. In a field, called “Gulegullas,” near Trelowarren, there was discovered in the lifetime of the late Sir R. R. Vyvyan (1820—79) a curious cave or vault, the walls of which are made of rough unhewn stones, the layers each slightly overlapping: the other, and the roof being finally closed by a flat slab; the passase, as far as it is now open, rousrhly assumes the form of a T, and the entrance to the side passage varies in height from 3 to 6 feet, and is supposed to have been intended as a means of egress from the British camp or fort, which can still be traced, and the outline of which it for the most part follows. Trelowarren, 1 ½ miles from Mawgan and 5 miles from Helston, is the seat of the Rev. Sir Vyell Donnithorne Vyvyan bart. J.P. who is lord of the manor and chief landowner ; the house, an ancient edifice of granite, almost wholly reconstructed within by Sir Richard Vyvyan, fifth baronet, in 1750, occupies three sides of a square and commands charming and varied views of the woodland seenery by which it is surrounded; there is an extensive library and many fine oil paintings, Including a portrait of Charles I. on horseback, presented to the family after the Restoration in acknowledgment of their devotion to the Royalist cause: attached to the mansion is a chapel containing an organ. At Bowgyhere is the experimental garden of the Technical Committee of the County Council, for fruit culture &c. under the superintendence of Mr. William Reed. The soil is principally loam and clay and fertile; the subsoil is gravel, marl and rock.
The chief crops are corn, hay and roots. The area is 5,274 acres; rateable value, £4,636; the population in 1891 was 752.
A School Board of 5 members was formed June 18th, 1875, for the united district of Mawgan-in-Meneage & St. Martin-in-Meneage; John W. Ginn Bartlett, clerk to the board.
Board Schools, Carrabone (boys), built in 1875, for 112 boys ; average attendance, 26, on the road to Helston, & opened in 1877, for 70 girls; average attendance, 32.
