Historical Description

ST. MERRYN is a parish and village, bounded on the west and north by the Bristol Channel, 8 miles east from Wadebridge station on the Great Western railway, 2 ½ south-west from Padstow, 8 north-by-west from St. Columb, in the Mid division of the county, hundred and petty sessional division of Pyder, St. Columb union and county court district, rural deanery of Pyder, archdeaconry of Cornwall and diocese of Truro. The church of St. Merryn is an ancient building in the Gothic style, partly constructed of the trap or basalt stone of the locality, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles, north and south porches and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing 6 bells: the monuments include one to Colonel Peter, d. Jan. 1753: the font formerly in this church, a reduced fac simile of that at Bodmin, is now in the church of St. Macra, at Maker; the font in use was removed here from the ruined church of St. Constantine in this parish: the church was restored in 1887 at a cost of £1,400, and affords 320 sittings. The register dates from the year 1688. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £234, including 34 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Truro, and held since 1891 by the Rev. Edward Olivey B.A. of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. Here are Wesleyan and Bible Christian chapels. A fair is held on the Monday before the second Tuesday in May, yearly, for cattle and sheep. The charities, amounting to £12 8s. yearly value, are derived from land, £8 3s. being for the repairs of the church and £4 5s. for poor widows. There is also a charity derived from the village green, which is let at a yearly rental of £2, for the young men’s sports. A lighthouse stands on Trevose Head, in this parish; and on a range of open land Called “The Warren,” the remains of the old tower and church of St. Constantine are still standing. Harlyn House, formerly the seat of the Treglowan, Mitchell and Peter families, is the residence of Thomas Hellyar esq. and the dining room retains a fine plaster ceiling. Two ancient gold Lunettes, found near the house by the late W. J. Hellyar esq. were presented to the Truro Museum by H.R.H. the Prince of Wales. Several battle axes, spear heads (both of flint and bronze), a large urn, incense cup and Roman coins have also been found here. The manorial rights are divided. Mrs. J. T. H. Peter, of Chyverton, Perran-Zabuloe, is a landowner, but most of the farmers farm their own land. The soil is mostly clayey; the subsoil is clayey. The chief crops are wheat and barley. The area is 3,944 acres of land, 8 of tidal water and 217 of foreshore; rateable value, £3,555 ; the population in 1891 was 489.

A School Board of 5 members was formed November 23, 1874; G. A. Hellyar, hon. clerk to the board.

Board School (mixed), built in 1876, at a cost of £1,209, for 120 children; average attendance, 50.
