Historical Description

ST. MEWAN is a parish, about 1 mile west from St. Austell, on the high road to Truro, in the Mid division of the county, west division of the hundred of Powder, petty sessional division of Powder East, St. Austell union and county court district, rural deanery of St. Austell, archdeaconry of Cornwall and diocese of Truro. The Great Western railway passes through the parish, the junction of the St. Stephen’s and Newquay line being at Burngullow station, 1 mile west-north-west. The church of St. Mewan is an ancient building of granite, supposed to date from the 13th century, and consists of chancel, nave of five bays, north transept, south aisle, south porch and a western tower of two stages with low pyramidal roof and containing 5 bells, all re-cast in 1748 and again in 1888: the east windows are memorials to the late F. Stephens esq. of Hembal, and the Bennet family; five other windows are also stained, and there are various modern tablets and monuments to the families of Hocker, Oliver, Carws, Borlase and others; the church was thoroughly restored in 1854 and enlarged in 1890—91, at a cost of £706, when the south aisle was extended, two stained windows erected and an oak screen placed in the tower arch. The register dates from the year 1693. The living is a rectory, net income £212, including 42 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the lords of the manor of Trewoon, and held since 1889 by the Rev. John Stephen Flynn B.D. of Trinity College, Dublin. The Free Methodist chapel here was erected in 1872. There is a reading room, supported by about 40 subscribers. St. Mewan beacon is a large tor of shorl and crystalline quartz, principal landowners are Sir Charles Brune Graves Sawle bart. of Penrice, John Tremayne esq. of Heligan, and Christopher Henry Thomas Hawkins esq. of Trewithan, Probus, who is also lord of the manor. The soil is callous; subsoil, granite. The chief crops are barley, oats and roots, and there is some good permanent pasture. The area is 2,265 acres; rateable value, £6,547; the population in 1891 was 1,092.

POLGOOTH, 1 ¼ miles south, STICKER, 1 ½ miles south-west, and TREWOON, 1 mile north, are hamlets; at Sticker is the mission chapel of St. Mark, erected in 1877, from designs by J. P. St. Aubyn esq. and consisting of chancel, nave and a small transept: it will seat 100 persons.

A School Board of 5 members was formed May 31, . 1872; Walter Giles, jun. of St. Austell, clerk to the board.

Public Elementary Board School (mixed), erected in 1874, on a site near the church, for 180 children, average attendance, 137.
