Historical Description
ST. MICHAEL CAERHAYES is a parish on the river Leeny near the shore of Veryan bay, 8 miles southeast from Grampound Road station on the Great Western railway and 10 south-south-west from St. Austell, in the Mid division of the county, west division of the hundred of Powder, petty sessional division of Powder South, St. Austell union and county court district, rural deanery of St. Austell, archdeaconry of Cornwall and diocese of Truro. The church of St. Michael, standing alone on the top of a hill, is a building of stone with granite facings, consisting of chancel, nave, north transept, south aisle of two bays, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 3 bells, all with inscriptions in Old English letters, the two last being invocations to St. Thomas and St. Barbara: all the windows are stained, and there is a fine reredos of mosaic work and a parclose of carved oak, both executed by the Rev. William Willimott M.A. rector 1852—78: at the end of the aisle is a statue, life size, of a British naval officer, wielding an actual sword, and said to represent one of the Bottesford family: in the arcade a number of helmets are suspended, and here hangs also the sword said to have been worn by Sir Hugh Trevanion at Bosworth Field, 21 Aug. 1485 : in the transept is a sepulchral arch, and here also remain the rood loft stairs: the south porch has a stoup and aumbry and on the north side is a pre-Norman doorway in a good state of preservation: there is a memorial to Mr. Zacharie Hooker, rector, 1643, and some others of later date: the church was partially restored in 1864 by the late John Michael Williams esq. and thoroughly restored by J. C. Williams esq. of Caerhayes Castle, in 1883, at a cost of £1,000: there are 80 sittings. The register of baptisms and marriages dates from the year 1594; burials, 1580. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £110, including 30 acres of glebe, with house, in the gift of John Bevill Fortescue esq. of Boconnoc, and held since 1893 by the Rev. George Martin M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. The rectory house, built in 1804 by the Rev. Charles Trevanion Kempe, rector here then, is pleasantly situated below, and at a short distance from the church. A reading room was erected by Mrs. Williams, of Caerhayes Castle, in 1893. Caerhayes Castle, the property and residence of John Charles Williams esq. lord of the manor and chief landowner, was erected shortly after the demolition of the ancient mansion in 1808; it is a noble structure, with lofty round towers and turrets, and is battlemented throughout ; the wall of the entrance hall bears the arms of Hen. VIII.; the principal entrance to the grounds is through a turreted gateway, with a lodge of corresponding design, and the whole character of the building harmonises with the picturesque wildness of the surrounding scenery; here is preserved a collection of minerals, formerly at Scorrier House, which geologists and persons of taste are kindly allowed to inspect. The park is about 100 acres in extent. The soil is loam; subsoil, slate. The area is 862 acres; rateable value, £1,119; the population in 1891 was 143.
Parish School; average attendance, 35 ; & supported by J. C. Williams esq School (mixed), rebuilt about 1862, for 30 children; average attendance, 27; & is supported by J. C. Williams esq. Some of the elder children attend the Board School at Gorran.
