Historical Description

Four miles west of St. Cleer is the small village of St. Neot's, originally denominated Motestor, from Neotus, who was the reputed brother of Alfred the Great, and died in 890.

The church is a very handsome structure.

According to the Doomsday survey, there was a monastery at this place in the time of Edward the Confessor, by whom founded uncertain, whose inmates are called "clerks of St. Neot;" but they retained at that time no more of their original possessions than one acre of land, so that the monastery fell to ruin and decay, and its name only has descended to the present age.

In the church of St. Neot's, at the east end of the nave, is a stone casket, 18 inches by 14, said to contain so much of the remains of the tutelar saint as were not carried into Huntingdonshire, and upon a wooden tablet inscribed to his honor and memory, are some uncouth rhymes. The windows of this church contain some fine specimens of painted glass, which though much damaged, are still very beautiful; and, according to Bishop Gibson, "they related to the Jew's traditions, which are exactly delivered in a Cornish book, in the Bodleian Library Arch. B. 31. and were probably derived anciently from the Jews themselves, who "were here in great numbers about the tin works.' One window exhibits the history of the creation, with a label, in gothic letters, to each representation; another describes the deluge; a third the legend of St. George; a fourth a series of representations from the legendary history of St. Neot. The others appear to have been embellished with figures of the saints.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

ST. NEOT is a very large parish, in the northern part mostly open moorland: the village, which is small, is on the Fowey stream, 3 miles north-by-west from Doublebois station on the Great Western railway, 6 north-west from Liskeard and 9 east from Bodmin, in the South Eastern division of the county, hundred and petty sessional division of West, Liskeard union and county court district, rural deanery of West, archdeaconry of Bodmin and diocese of Truro. St. Neot, after whom the place is named, is said to have been an elder brother of Alfred the Great. The church of St. Neot, or St. Guerier, as it was formerly called, dedicated Oct. 14th, 1321, is a large building of granite, in the Perpendicular style of the 15th century, consisting of chancel, nave of seven bays, aisles, south porch and a fine embattled western tower of earlier date, with pinnacles, containing 6 bells, all cast in 1777: the south porch is groined, and has a parvise above: the church possesses an interesting series of stained windows, 17 in number, assigned by Whitaker to the 12th century, but by others to circ. 1480: these were restored in 1824, at the cost of the late Richard Gerveys Grylls esq. then patron of the living, at a cost of £2,000; two illustrate the legends of St. George and St. Neot, and in others are subjects from the Old Testament, the hierarchy of angels and figures of saints : in 1864 the chancel was restored by the late Lieut.-Col. S. M. Grylls: in 1885 a sum of £600 was expended in interior restoration and part of the old seats were replaced by oak benches: in 1889—90 a new vestry was added and the whole of the nave reseated at a cost of £1,730: in the church is a monument, with a history of St. Neot in 32 rhyming couplets, and memorials to William Bere, ob. 1610; the Rev. S. Thomas, 37 years vicar, ob. 1702, and Millicent, his wife, ob. 1705 ; Thomas Pomery, gent. ob. 1750, and to the family of Dangar, 1820—68 : there are 500 sittings. In the churchyard and the adjoining vicarage grounds stand three ancient crosses, and in the parish, near the Launceston road, is the famous “Four Hole Cross,” a shaft about 8 feet in height, ornamented with scrolls and interlaced work, with a mutilated head, two holes only now remaining. A new burial ground was presented by the late Lieut.-Col. Grylls in 1886, and opened in the following year. The register dates from the year 1549 (4th Edward VI.). The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £300, including 26 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Mrs. Grylls, and held since 1896 by the Rev. George Edward Hermon M.A. of Christ Church, Oxford, who resides at Doublebois house, Liskeard. There are Wesleyan and Bible Christian chapels at St. Neot, and Bible Christian chapels at Trenant, Tredinnick and Harrowbridge. The charities are of about £108 yearly value. The Church Institute was erected in 1896 at the cost of Rev. G. E. Hermon M.A. and others, and contains reading and recreation rooms divided by a movable partition, and is also used for entertainments &c. At Draynes is an iron mission church, built in 1877, at the cost of the Rev. G. E. Hermon M.A. of Doublebois House, Liskeard, who is also officiating minister: it will seat 120 persons. A fair is held on the first Tuesday in April and November, yearly, for cattle. St. Neot’s Well, about a quarter of a mile west of the church, was carefully and substantially reconstructed about 1870. Near the northern extremity of the parish, amid bleak and desolate moors, and at an elevation of 890 feet above the sea level, is Dosmery or Dozmare pool, fed by some undiscovered spring, and the subject of various legendary tales; Brown Geliy Hill, a mile south of the pool, is a rocky eminence, 1,100 feet above the sea level. Lewarne, the property of Mrs. Grylls, and now the residence of Maj.-Gen. Robert Morris, is a modern mansion in the Tudor Gothic style, situated in extensive grounds on an elevation about 100 feet above Liskeard road, and commands a magnificent prospect of the river Fowey. Mrs. Grylls, who is lady of the manor, Lord Robartes, Cecil Edward Bewes esq. of Ridgeway, Plympton St. Mary, Mrs. Glencross, of Luxstowe, Liskeard, and Edward Coode esq. of Polapit Tamar, Werrington, Devon, are the chief landowners. The bailiff of the manor (Richard Marks) receives by custom a hat from the lord every two years. The soil is various; subsoil is slate and granite. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and roots. The area is 13,997 acres; assessed acreage, 12,057; rateable value, £6,660; the population in 1891 was 1,237.

This parish is a contributory to St. Cleer School Board, sending two members.

Board School, built in 1872, for 250 children; average attendance, 35 boys, 34 girls & 34 infants.
