Historical Description

ST. STYTHIANS, or St. Stithians, is a township, parish and large scattered village, 4 miles south-west from Perranwell station on the Great Western railway, 4 south-south-east from Redruth, 4 north-west from Penryn and 6 north-west from Falmouth, in the Truro division of the county, hundred and petty sessional division of East Kerrier, Redruth union and county court district, rural deanery of Carnmarth, archdeaconry of Cornwall and diocese of Truro. The river Kennall, rising near Carnmenellis, intersects the parish. The church of St. Stythians is a building of granite in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, partly erected in the reign of Edward III. and consists of chancel, nave, aisles, north porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing 4 bells, cast in 1767 and 1790: the nave and north aisle are Decorated and the tower and south aisle Perpendicular: the chancel, restored in 1862, retains a piscina: the east window is a memorial to Lieut. John Wright R.N. d. 1848 ; there is another to Richard Lanyon, d. 1863, and one to Thomas Reed, d. 1812, and Thomas Horker, d. 1855, besides other memorial windows: the rood stairs remain in the north wall, and over the entrance thereto is a brass plate, inscribed in old English text, with twelve admonitory English verses, arranged in couplets and addressed both to pastors and people, but without date: the monuments are modern: the church was thoroughly restored in 1873, at a cost of about £700, and again in 1886, at a cost of £150, and has 330 sittings. The register dates from the year 1623. The living is a vicarage, with that of Perran-ar-worthal annexed, joint net yearly value £300, including 52 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Viscount Falmouth, and held since 1896 by the Rev. William Ralph Daine M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. There are Wesleyan and Free Methodist chapels. A fair is held on the nearest Monday to the 13th of July yearly, for horses and cattle. The Kennall, a stream of considerable size, passes through this parish, working the grist, paper, flour, gunpowder and various other mills. Viscount Falmouth is lord of the manor, and Col. Arthur Tremayne, of Carclew, Mylor, John Charles Williams esq. of Caerhayes Castle, the Rev. Jas. Ford and Hy. Rogers esq. Helston, D. Henry Shilson esq. and Mrs. M. J. Moore are chief landowners. The soil is poor loam and some clayey; the subsoil is granite. The chief crops are oats and green crops and some land in pasture. The area is 4,291 acres ; rateable value, £6,582: the population in 1891 was 1,768.

A School Board of 5 members was formed June 6, 1871; Wm. Martin, clerk to the board & attendance officer, Kennall farm.

Board School, erected at a cost of £800, for 120 boys, 130 girls & 77 infants; average attendance, 92 boys, 112 girls & 42 infants.
