Historical Description

ST. WENN is a parish, 3 miles north from Victoria station on the Newquay branch (Cornwall Minerals) of the Great Western railway, 4 miles east from St. Columb, in the Mid division of the county, hundred and petty sessional division of Pydar, St. Columb union and county court district, rural deanery of Pydar, archdeaconry of Cornwall and diocese of Truro. The church of St. Wenna, rebuilt in 1823, and restored in 1868, is a building chiefly of granite in the Early English style, and consists of chancel, nave of three bays, aisles, south porch and a massive embattled western tower, the upper stage of which, destroyed by lightning in 1663, has never been fully restored : the plinth is enriched with quatrefoils : the belfry contains 6 good bells, cast in 1777 : there are sittings for 223 persons. The register dates from the year 1706. The living is a vicarage, commuted tithe rent-charge £161, average £125, gross income £185, including 128 acres of glebe, with house, in the gift of Jonathan Rashleigh esq. and held since 1884 by the Rev. Thomas James Bennett B.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. Here are Wesleyan and Bible Christian chapels. Some remains of an ancient chapel and well, dedicated to St. Mary Magdalen, exist at Carenza-Wartha, near Cranworth; the well, remarkable for its pure water, is still called “Chapel Well,” and there is another dedicated to St. Wenna. On St. Breock Downs, which extend into this parish and are 739 feet above the sea level, lies a huge monolith, called “The Long Stone,” 27 feet in extreme length; it is now prostrate, but is supposed from its position at four cross roads to have once been a boundary mark. Fairs are held at Treganatha on the 6th May and the 1st August. The principal landowners are Lord Robartes, Charles Glynn Prideaux-Brune esq. of Prideaux Place, Padstow, Edward Thomas Theophilus Whitford-Hawkey esq. of St. Columb, John Chas. Williams esq. of Caerhayes Castle and John Bevill Fortescue esq. of Boconnoc, Lostwithiel. The soil is of various kinds, and the subsoil is chiefly loamy. The crops are the usual cereals. The area is 3,687 acres; rateable value, £2,886; the population in 1891 was 423.

TREGANATHA is a village, 1 mile south-west, and ROSENANNON, 1 mile north-west from the church.

A School Board of 5 members was formed April 14, 1883 ; Rev. Thomas James Bennett B.A. is clerk to the board.

Board School, built in 1855, for 150 children; average attendance, 46.
