Historical Description

STOKE CLIMSLAND is a parish and township, bounded on the north by the river Inney and on the east by the Tamar, which here separates the county from Devon, and is 8 miles south from Launceston, 9 west from Tavistock station on the Great Western and London and South Western railways, 3 north from Callington and 16 north from Plymouth, in the North Eastern division of the county, north division of the hundred of East, petty sessional division of East Middle. Launceston union and county court district, rural deanery of Trigg Major, archdeaconry of Bodmin and diocese of Truro. The East Cornwall Minerals railway has 3 stations in this parish, viz. Monks Corner, Downgate and Kelly Bray. The church (dedication unknown) is a fine building of granite in the Late Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave of six bays, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower, with crocketed pinnacles, containing a clock and 8 bells, the tenor, weighing nearly one ton, all cast by Mr. Pennington, late of this parish: the chancel retains a piscina: the east window is a memorial to Elizabeth Rore, wife of the Hon. and Rev. William H. Spencer, rector, d. 1851; another window has been inserted in the chancel to Georgi:na Mary Call, d. 1837, by her sister, Augusta Hornby: there are monuments to Ezekiel Helier M.A. rector, ob. 1614; Jn. Bagwell B.D. rector, ob. 1623, and various others of the 17th and later centuries, to the families of Clarke, Hawton, Knight, Kekewich and Call: there are 500 sittings. The register dates from 1538. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £536, including 49 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of H.R.H. the Duke of Cornwall K.G. and held since 1876 by the Rev. Richard Henry Manley M.A. and late fellow of Clare College, Cambridge. There are Wesleyan chapels at Luckett, Venterton and Holmbush; Bible Christian chapels at Cross Bray Shop, Monks Corner and Downgate; a chapel for Plymouth Brethren at Hampt and a Free Methodist chapel at Down House. A fair is held yearly on the last Monday in May for cattle and sheep. Whiteford House is a mansion, with polygonal projections at the angles, situated half a mile south from the village, in a spacious park, with a bridge and artificial cascades, and is the property of H.R.H. the Duke of Cornwall K.G. but at present unoccupied. H.R.H. the Duke of Cornwall K.G. who is lord of the manors of Climsland and Climsland Prior, the Duke of Bedford and William Rendell, William H. Nattle, Thomas Short and Simon Rattenbury esqrs. are the chief landowners. The soil is friable loam; subsoil, clay and slate. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley, turnips and strawberries. The area is 8,856 acres; rateable value, £7,692; the population in 1891 was 1,865.

BEALSMILL, 2 north; DOWNGATE, 1 south, has a Bible Christian chapel; LUCKETT, 2 east-southeast, has a Wesleyan chapel; MONKS CORNER, 2 ½ south-east, has a Bible Christian chapel; OLDMILL is 1 south-east; VENTERDON, a quarter of a mile northwest, has a Wesleyan chapl; KELLY BRAY is 2 miles south; HOLMBUSH, 2 miles south, has a Wesleyan chapel, built in 1873; HAMPT, 2 miles east, has a chapel for the Brethren.
