Historical Description

Stratton is a very inconsiderable place, situated in a low cold country, which, however, might be much improved by draining. It was, in former times, one of the most flourishing villages in the county. The church at Kilhampton, four miles to the north of Stratton, is large and handsome, said to have been built by an ancient baron of the Grenville line. It has, among other pieces of antiquity, a fine large font, and a curiously carved pulpit.

About two miles north of Stratton is the small port of Bude, from whence immense quantities of sea-sand are daily taken for agricultural purposes.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

STRATTON, so called from its position on a Roman road (stratum) leading from Cornwall into Devon, is a small market and union town, township and parish, 8 miles west from Holsworthy terminal station of a branch of the London and South Western railway, 223 from London and 18 north from Launceston, giving name to a hundred, and is head of a petty sessional division, in the North Eastern division of the county, Holsworthy county court district, rural deanery of Stratton, archdeaconry of Bodmin and diocese of Truro. The church of St. Andrew is an ancient building of stone in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave of six bays, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing a clock and 8 bells, of which 6 were recast and two were added in 1778; the clock was placed in the tower in memory of the recovery of H.R.H. the Prince of Wales from his serious illness in 1871; on the porch is a sundial : in the north aisle is a tomb with the effigy of a crusader, supposed to reprsent Sir Ranulph de Blancheminster, and at the east end of the north aisle is an altar-tomb of black marble, with brass effigies of Sir John Arundell of Trerice, kt. ob. 25th November, 1561, his two wives, Mary (Bevyll) and Juliana (Eryssy), ob.
