Historical Description
Stratton is a very inconsiderable place, situated in a low cold country, which, however, might be much improved by draining. It was, in former times, one of the most flourishing villages in the county. The church at Kilhampton, four miles to the north of Stratton, is large and handsome, said to have been built by an ancient baron of the Grenville line. It has, among other pieces of antiquity, a fine large font, and a curiously carved pulpit.
About two miles north of Stratton is the small port of Bude, from whence immense quantities of sea-sand are daily taken for agricultural purposes.
STRATTON, so called from its position on a Roman road (stratum) leading from Cornwall into Devon, is a small market and union town, township and parish, 8 miles west from Holsworthy terminal station of a branch of the London and South Western railway, 223 from London and 18 north from Launceston, giving name to a hundred, and is head of a petty sessional division, in the North Eastern division of the county, Holsworthy county court district, rural deanery of Stratton, archdeaconry of Bodmin and diocese of Truro. The church of St. Andrew is an ancient building of stone in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave of six bays, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing a clock and 8 bells, of which 6 were recast and two were added in 1778; the clock was placed in the tower in memory of the recovery of H.R.H. the Prince of Wales from his serious illness in 1871; on the porch is a sundial : in the north aisle is a tomb with the effigy of a crusader, supposed to reprsent Sir Ranulph de Blancheminster, and at the east end of the north aisle is an altar-tomb of black marble, with brass effigies of Sir John Arundell of Trerice, kt. ob. 25th November, 1561, his two wives, Mary (Bevyll) and Juliana (Eryssy), ob. March, 1567—8, and twelve children; the figure of the knight is in complete armour, the two wives are clad in furred and richly ornamented robes with long hanging slashed sleeves; over the effigies are two quartered shields, between them two figures of children, one being a matrix only; below are ten others, and matrices of two shields; a marginal inscription surrounds the whole : the south window in the chancel is a memorial to the Rev. C. R. Holmes, a former vicar: at the west end of the south aisle is another memorial window to Edward Shearme esq. and there are six other stained windows : the circular font of Transitional date is encircled with a cable moulding, and the benches are of ancient carved oak: on the quoin of an ancient doorway (now blocked up) at the west end of the north aisle is carved the date 1160: the exterior walls of this aisle are Norman: the church was restored in 1878 and again in 1887—9 at a cost of £2,113, when the tower and roofs were renovated, the north arcade rebuilt, the chancel repaved, a carved oak screen and choir stalls erected, and the church repaired and reseated, the old carved bench ends being retained: a new organ was presented by Miss King, of Stratton, at a cost of £690, and a brass eagle lectern by Philip King esq. of Stratton : there are sittings for 400 persons. The register dates from the year 1687, and has an entry of the burial, March 10th, 1691, of Elizabeth Cornish, widow, aged 113. The living is a vicarage, net income £135, with residence and 2 ½ acres of glebe, in the gift of H.R.H. the Duke of Cornwall, and held since 1893 by the Rev. George Wingate M.A. of Peterhouse, Cambridge, and acting chaplain to the Stratton Union. Workhouse. The Wesleyan chapel, in Market street, originally opened in 1837, was rebuilt in 1890, at a cost of £1,200, and has sittings for 200 persons. The Free Methodist chapel was built in 1838, and there is a Bible Christian chapel at Bush, in this parish, built in 1869. The Stratton Institute, in the centre of the town, has recreation, smoking and reading rooms, and a library of 400 volumes. The market is held on Tuesday, and the fairs on 19th May, 8th November and nth December. The Police Station, built in 1863, is a structure of brick, with residence for the divisional inspector and a constable.
The Cottage Hospital, which stands near the town, was erected in 1866, and is intended for the benefit of the poor of the parishes comprised within the union, and has 7 beds: a new bath and other rooms were added in 1896. About half-a-mile west of the town, within a farm orchard, are the remains of a quadrangular moat, once surrounding a fortified residence, and now called “Binhamy Castle”: vestiges of Roman roads are found in various parts of the parish. At Stamford Hill, near the town, the Parliamentary forces, under the Earl of Stamford and Sir George Chudleigh, were defeated by the Cornish Royalist army, under Sir Bevill Grenville and Sir Ralph Hopton, on the 16th May, 1643; a tablet in commemoration of the event is placed in the wall of the Tree inn, formerly the old manor house. Francis John Thynne esq. who is lord of the manor, and the Right Hon. Sir Thomas Dyke Acland bart. P.C. are the principal landowners. The soil is light loam; subsoil, various. The chief crops are wheat, barley and roots. The area is 2,380 acres (including 220 of water) ; rateable value, £7,405 ; the population in 1891 was 1,880 (including officers and inmates in the workhouse), and those in Bude Haven, which is in the civil parish of Stratton.
DIDDIES, half mile east; BOWDEN, quarter mile south; HELEBRIDGE, 2 south-west; LUNSTONE, 2 south-west, and RODDSBRIDGE, 1 ½ south-west, are hamlets of this parish, but Lunstone and a portion of Roddsbridge are included in the ecclesiastical district of Bude.
Petty Sessions are held at the Court house on the 2nd Monday in every month at 11 a.m. The following places are included in the petty sessional division:-Jacobstow, Kilkhampton, Launcells, Marhamchurch, Morwenstow, North Tamerton, Poundstock, Poughill, Stratton, Week-St.-Mary & Whitstone.
STRATTON UNION
Board day, alternate Tuesday, one fortnight at 11 a.m. the next at 2.30 p.m. at the Union house.
The following places are included in the union:-Jacobstow, Kilkhampton, Launcells, Marhamchurch, Morwenstow, Poundstock, Poughill, St. Gennys, Stratton, Week-St.-Mary & Whitstone. The population of the union in 1891 was 7,119; area, 54,120 acres; rateable value, £39,835.
The Workhouse, situated on a hill near the town, in the direction of Bude, & erected in 1856, is a rectangular building of stone with wings, & will hold 80 inmates; Thomas Mill Medland, master; Mrs. Mary Jane Medland, matron; Rev. George Wingate M.A. acting chaplain; James Montague Braund, medical officer; Miss Ada Mary Medland, schoolmistress.
