Historical Description

TALLAND is a scattered parish on the sea coast, 2 miles west from Looe, 1 ½ east from Polperro and 9 south-south-west from Liskeard station on the Great Western railway, in the South Eastern division of the county, hundred and petty sessional division of West, Liskeard union and county court district, rural deanery of West, archdeaconry of Bodmin and diocese of Truro. This parish includes part of the small fishing town of Polperro. Ecclesiastically the whole of Polperro is annexed to this parish, the western portion of which was attached in 1886. The church of St. Talland, situated on the side of a hill, on the eastern side of an inlet of the sea called Talland Bay, is a building of stone in the Early English and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave of six bays, south or Killygarth aisle, north transept and an embattled tower on the south side, of three stages, 55 feet high and containing 4 bells: the tower is connected with the church by a large porch with two entrances : the interior is seated with ancient benches of carved oak, displaying the emblazoned shields of Beville, Grenville and others: in the aisle are two helmets, one of which bears the crest of the Bevilles : in the aisle is a tomb with full-length effigy of John Beville esq. ob. 1570, with six verses and a long genealogical epitaph in English ; there are other memorials to the family of Mellow, 1625; Sumars, 1708—10; Kendall, 1709—47; Nicholas, 1788—1833; Elizabeth, wife of John Mirth, ob. 1687; the Rev. Thomas Gurney, vicar, d. 1760; and the Rev. Daniel Evans, rector of East Lydford and vicar of St. Keverne, d. 1854: there are 450 sittings. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1651; marriages, 1653; burials, 1654; the latter include burials from West Looe. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £118, with residence and 1 acre of glebe, in the gift of William and Thomas Gundry esqrs. and held since 1887 by the Rev. John Parsons, who resides at Polperro. Midway between Polperro and Looe, and in the parish of Talland, is the small Catholic church of Sclerder, dedicated to our Lady of Light, and founded in 1843 by the late Sir Harry Trelawny bart. and his daughters. A charity of about £6 yearly is distributed amongst boys of Talland parish annually, as a reward for attendance, proficiency and good conduct at some elementary school: the charity was originally left by Capt. Charles Kendal (died 1749) as a yearly payment to a schoolmaster in Polperro, who should take a certain number of fishermen’s sons free. The manor of Portlooe belongs to the Duchy of Cornwall; that of Killigarth was purchased in 1871 of Nicholas Kendall esq. by William and Thomas Gundry esqrs. for about £27,000. The principal landowners are Sir William Lewis Salusbury Trelawny bart. of Trelawne, Pelynt, the Duchy of Cornwall and William and Thomas Gundry esqrs. The soil is good slate and shelf; subsoil, the same. The chief crops are wheat, barley and roots; the acreage is 2,665 ; rateable value, £3,101, including Looe island; the population in 1891 was 795.

A School Board of 5 members was formed November 24th, 1875, for the united district of Talland & Lansallos. The children of this place attend the Board school at Polperro.
