Historical Description

About three miles south of Probus is the ancient town of Tregony, situated on the river Fal, and is supposed by some to have been the Roman Cenio; the harbour being called Cennius. Traces of Roman architecture are still discovered; but none sufficient to establish it a military station. The name and situation agree with the itinerary of Richard of Cirencester.

This place was formerly of some consequence; but began to decay upon the trade and population being removed to Truro. It was incorporated by charter granted in the reign of James I. and the government of the town vested in a mayor and eight burgesses. The right of election is in all the householders that bolt a pot, from whence the voters are called pot-wallopers; their number has been decreasing of late years, and at present does not exceed 100. The town consists chiefly of one street, and the greatest part of the borough belongs to Richard Barwell, Esq. of Sanstead Park in Sussex, and Sir Christopher Hawkins.

The seats in this neighbourhood are, Trewarthenick, belonging to Francis Gregor, Esq. the Rev. Mr. Whitaker's, at Ruan Lanyhorn; and Tregothnan House, the seat of Lord Viscount Falmouth, which stands on a rising ground, near the river Fal, over which, and the harbour of Falmouth, it commands several fine views.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

TREGONY, formerly a borough, is a town and parish, 4 ¼ miles from Grampound Road station on the Great Western railway, 7 south-west from St. Austell, 7 ½ east from Truro and 3 south from Grampound; it is in the Mid division of the county, the west division of the hundred of Powder, petty sessional division of Powder south, Truro union and county court district, rural deanery of Powder, archdeaconry of Cornwall and diocese of Truro. The town, which is situated in the parishes of Comelly, Cuby, Veryan and Tregony St. James, was at one time of great importance as a seaport, the sea being within a quarter of a mile of the town, and the Fal then a wide and deep river; vessels of large tonnage came up to the quay, which is now no longer visible, the sea having receded to no less a distance than Jour miles, and the river being little more than a rivulet. This change has occurred in consequence of the sand and rubbish from adjacent tin streams choking up the channel, and from the river itself being diverted from its proper course to assist in tin-washing; the river is crossed by a stone bridge of two arches, connecting the town with Cornelly, and rebuilt in 1893 on a larger scale. The town was a borough by prescription and charter, and in the reign of Edward I. had the Tight to hold markets and fairs and was governed by a portreeve; in 1621 it was incorporated by James I. as a free borough, the Corporation consisting of a mayor and 7 capital burgesses, the senior of whom was also a justice of the peace; an indefinite number of burgesses, recorder, town clerk &c. and this charter continued in force until 1832, when the Corporation was allowed to lapse, and in 1845 its property was disposed of; the borough seal, with the town arms thereon, is still preserved. The town, as a parliamentary borough, sent two members to Parliament from 1294 until the disfranchisement under the Reform Act of 1832. The church of St. James, noted by Leland in 1533, has ceased to exist: one angle of the walls, however, remained standing till 1740; of the castle which adjoined it not a vestige remains, and nothing is now to be seen except portions of the entrenchments on the banks of the river. The chapel of St. Anne, which in Lelands time stood in the middle of the town, was eventually converted into a cloth hall, and in 1777 became ruinous, but is now (1897) about to be restored. The inhabitants at present attend Cuby parish church. The living is a rectory, with the vicarage of St. Cuby annexed, joint net yearly value £269, with 81 acres of glebe, in the gift of trustees, and held since 1890 by the Rev. John Fry Reeves, who was previously curate here. There are Congregational, Wesleyan and Bible Christian chapels. A cemetery for Tregony and Cuby, about half an acre in extent, was formed in 1872 at a cost of £300, and is under the control of a burial board of nine members. In the centre of the town is a market house (now disused), with a stone tower and clock; the nominal market day is Saturday. There is a charity fund for six decayed housekeepers, originally bequeathed by Hugh Boscowen esq. in 1696: the income, £97, is derived from 90 acres of land and the interest of £400 railway stock. These pensioners dwell in a building which has recently (1897) been restored. There was anciently here a Benedictine monastery, a cell of St. Marie Du Val at St. Anthony in Roseland, and afterwards of Merton, and dedicated to St. James. The area is 100 acres, including 10 acres of waste; rateable value, £747; the population, in 1891 was 558.

Petty Sessions are held at the Oddfellows’ hall the first Monday in each month, at 11 a.m. The following places are included in the division:-Comelly, Cuby, Gerrans, Lamorran, Merther, Philleigh, Portloe, Port Scatha, Probus, Ruan Lanihorne, St. Anthony, St. Michael Caerhayes, St. Just, St. Mawes, Tregony St. James, Tresillian, Trewithian & Veryan.

SCHOOLS

A School Board of 7 members was formed October 18, 1875, for the united district of Tregony, Cornelly & Cuby, with Veryan contributary with 2 members; Ralph Freethy, clerk to the board & attendance officer.

Board School, built in 1887, with master’s residence attached, at a cost of £1,300, for 165 children; average attendance, 46 boys, 37 girls & 44 infants.
