Historical Description
TREVALGA is a parish and village, about 4 ½ miles from Camelford station (opened August, 1893), on the new branch of the South Western railway from Launceston to Wadebridge, 6 north-west from Camelford, 20 north from Bodmin and 20 west of Launceston, in the North Eastern division of the county, hundred and petty sessional division of Lesnewth, Camelford union and county court district, rural deanery of Trigg Minor, archdeaconry of Bodmin and diocese of Truro; it stands on the shore of the Bristol Channel, which here rises with bold and lofty stone cliffs without beach or strand sheer out of the waves that dash ceaselessly against them. This coast, which is, perhaps, the most grandly picturesque in the north of Cornwall, has adjacent to it several rocky islands, the haunt of countless sea birds, the most remarkable being Long Island, the rocky surface of which terminates in a sharp peak about 300 feet above the sea. The parish church of St. Petrock is an ancient building of stone, in the Transition Norman, Early English and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel with north transept or chapel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower of three stages, diminishing towards the top and containing 3 bells, the first of which is undated; the other two were cast respectively in 1756 and 1773 : the transeptal chapel retains a piscina and a hagioscope, and at the east end is a bracket; the walls are covered with ornamental work in colour of the 13th century: the font, of local greenstone, is circular, and dates from the Norman period: there are some carved bench ends: the chancel has memorials to the Trehane family (1790—1842), and to James May, rector, d. Oct. 11, 1832; in the chapel is a monument to Samuel Roscarrock, ob. Dec. 1640: in 1893 two memorial windows were erected in the chancel and in the tower by members of the family of the late B. Bolitho Stephens esq. to their parents: the church was restored in 1875 at a cost of £500, and has 90 sittings : in the churchyard is a very ancient granite cross, 5 ft. 8 in. high and 1 ft. 4 in. wide, with a Greek cross on each side of the round head; here also are inscribed stones to Wm.Laskey, rector, d. 20 Oct.1793 ; to John Mitchell Wade, rector of Ashcombe and vicar of Barnstaple, d. 23 May, 1820, and to the Wade, Rickard and Trehane families. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1538; marriages, 1539; burials, 1691. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £116, including 39 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Truro, and held since 1890 by the Rev. Arthur Henry Cooke M.A. of Oxford University, and surrogate and Rural Dean of Trigg Minor. There is a small Bible Christian chapel, erected in 1872, and seating 84 persons. The Growa slate quarries are on the north-western cliffs, and on the south-western cliffs mining operations for silver-lead were formerly carried on, but the works are now closed. Just outside the southern and most inland extremity of the parish is an ancient British mound, called “Cadon Barrow,” situated 1,011 feet above the level of the sea, from which a very extensive panoramic view can be obtained. King Arthur's quoit, a large stone, probably the displaced cover of a cromlech, lies by the roadside, about half a mile to the west of the village. Trehane Barton, in this parish, was in the reign of Elizabeth held by the Roscarrock family; in the 18th century it belonged to the Rickards, and was rebuilt by Thomas Rickard in 1743, as appears from an inscription over the entrance. Redavallen, supposed to have been the manor house of the manor of Trevalga, is a curious antique mansion, built in the shape of the letter E; the walls were once loop-holed for defence, and in the splay of one of the windows is the date 1642. The manor of Trevalga, one of the most ancient in the county, is conjectured to be identical with the “Trevagav” of Domesday Book: at the beginning of the 13th century it was held by the Bassett family, and continued with them until 1601, when it was sold, and then passed successively to the families of Welsh and Northcote, from whom, in 1682, it was purchased by Mr. William Bolitho, of Exeter. Richard Bolitho Stephens esq. and trustees of Nicholas Taylor esq. are now lords of the manor of Trevalga and chief landowners. The soil is light; the subsoil is blue slate. The chief crops are wheat, barley and roots. The grazing lands are remarkably good. The acreage is 1,230; rateable value, £978 ; the population in 1891 was 126.
This place is included in the Boscastle United School Board district, formed Jan. 26, 1875.
