Historical Description

Between Lestwithiel and Fowey is Trewardreth, or Tywardreath, or House on the Sands, within about five miles of the latter place, on the border of St. Austel Bay. At this place there was a Benedictine monastery, which was dissolved by Henry VIII. Its revenues then amounted to 1231. 9s. 3d. per annum. In the church here are some ancient oak seats, curiously carved. Numerous Roman coins, chiefly of the lower empire, have been found at Trewardreth, and many of them are to be seen in the cabinet at Menabilly, hereafter mentioned. Fowey.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

TYWARDREATH is a parish and pretty little town, 4 miles south from Lostwithiel, and a half mile east from Par station on the Great Western railway, in the South Eastern division of the county, west division of the hundred of Powder, petty sessional division of Powder Tywardreath, St. Austell union and county court district, rural deanery of St. Austell, archdeaconry of Cornwall and diocese of Truro. There are Water Works at Newhouse in this parish, constructed about 1873 to supply the houses at Par Green and the shipping port of Par. The village and parish is supplied with water from works belonging to the St. Austell Rural District Council. The church of St. Andrew, standing near the site of, and formerly connected with, the ancient Benedictine priory of St. Andrew, is a fine edifice of stone, and was till lately one of the oldest in this part of Cornwall, having been built in 1347; but was almost entirely rebuilt, with the exception of the tower, in 1880, at a cost of £4,000, under the direction of Mr. Richard Coad, architect, of London, when it was re-seated in pine and oak and new roofed, an organ chamber built, and an organ and screens erected: the original altar slab, incised with five crosses, was discovered and replaced; the church now consists of chancel, nave, south aisle, with an arcade of seven arches supported by massive granite pillars, north transept, south porch, and an embattled western tower containing 6 bells, and a clock, placed in the tower in 1887 at a cost of £160: a reredos was erected in 1889, at a cost of £280, and in 1892 the bells were rehung and the tower renovated, at an expense of £70: the Rashleigh chapel, at the east end of the south aisle and separated therefrom by carved oak parclose screens, has on the bench ends the arms of the family from 1388; the carved work in this chapel and throughout the church is by Harry Hems, of Exeter: there are two piscinae and memorials to Thomas Collins, last prior of St. Andrew’s Priory, ob. 1539 ; William Baker, of Kilmarth, 1636 ; to the Rashleigh family, and others: the church affords 400 sittings: in 1884 an addition was made to the churchyard. The register dates from the year 1642. The living is a vicarage, with the chapelry of Tregaminion annexed, joint net yearly value £240, with 2 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Jonathan Rashleigh esq. and held since 1895 by the Rev. Septimus Valentine Baker M.A. of Jesus College, Cambridge, who had been curate in charge since 1876. The chapel of ease at Tregaminion, 2 miles south-by-east, was built and endowed by William Rashleigh esq. in 1815, and is an edifice of stone consisting of chancel, nave and south porch, with sittings for 150 persons. There is a Church Mission Room at Porcupine, Highway. The Wesleyan chapel, erected in 1828, is a large building of stone, seating about 400 persons. There is also a small Wesleyan chapel at Polkerris. The Bible Christian chapel, built in 1858, will seat about 300 persons, and there is another at Highway, erected in 1841, and rebuilt in 1890. The Town Hall, erected in 1862, and the County Police Station, built in 1860, are both of stone. A Freemasons’ hall was erected in 1894—95. There is a subscription Reading Room, with a billiard room attached, and supported by private members. The Working Men’s Institute contains reading and recreation rooms and has a library of over 100 volumes. The Rural Gardening Society here, established in 1830, is the oldest of the kind in Cornwall, and has now held 67 annual shows. Here are the head quarters of the Cornish Tent Company Limited, and there is also a mineral water factory. In this parish are the late Fowey Consols celebrated copper mine, which paid about £200,000 profit; also the South Fowey Consols copper mine, not at present working; and the (New) Fowey Consols tin mine. There is a cattle fair on the 10th June; and the parish feast on St. Andrew’s day. At Polkerris, a small place on the coast in this parish, about 2 miles south, is a Royal National Lifeboat station, established in 1859. A regatta is held annually, generally at the latter end of August, There are Almshouses for seven poor widows at Polmear, four of which were erected by the late William Rashleigh esq. of Menabilly, in 1855, and adjoining is a residence for a nurse: there are now (1897) four inmates, each receiving 3 s. 6d. weekly. The Benedictine Priory of St. Andrew, founded in this place by A. Cardyngham, temp. William I. stood in a valley to the south of the church; it was a cell to the monastery of St. Sergius at Angers, and at the time of its dissolution had seven monks and revenues valued at £123. The tombstone of the last prior, Thomas Collyns, is in the transept of the church; he died 1534. On August 31, 1644, a severe skirmish took place in this parish between the Royalist forces, commanded by the King and Sir Richard Grenville, and the troops of the Parliament, in which the latter were compelled to surrender. At Tregaminion there remains the round head of an ancient cross, with a fragment of the shaft, fixed in a low base; and at Menabilly, a similar cross head, on a large circular base; another ancient cross, now standing at Tregaminion, was brought from Milltown, Lanlivery. On the road from Menabilly to Polmear, halfway down a steep and dangerous hill, a cross has been erected by Jonathan Rashleigh esq. to commemorate his marvellous escape in 1845, when his horses having bolted down the hill were stopped at this spot. Menabilly, the seat of Jonathan Rashleigh esq. B.A., D.L., J.P. is an enlarged building of stone, standing on an eminence near the sea, and surrounded by park lands, woods and pleasure grounds of about 250 acres in extent, and commands an extensive view over the British Channel; in the ground stands a grotto, the building of which was commenced by the late Philip Rashleigh esq. of Menabilly, more than two centuries ago. Trenython, the property and residence of the Right Rev. John Gott D.D. Bishop of Truro, is a well-built mansion, about half a mile east of the town, on an eminence, and commanding splendid views of the surrounding scenery. Kilmarth, the seat of Evelyn William Rashleigh esq. J.P. about 1 ½ miles south of Tywardreath, is a building of stone, in the Queen Anne style, standing on an elevated site and affording fine views of the Channel. Jonathan Rashleigh esq. who is lord of the manor, John Bevill Fortescue esq. of Boconnoc, and Arthur Francis Basset esq. Tehidy, are the principal landowners. The soil is clayey; subsoil, slate. The chief crops are oats, wheat, barley and turnips. The area is 3,252 acres ; rateable value, £8,235 ; the population in 1891 was 2,097.
