Historical Description

WARBSTOW is a parish and village, 2 ½ miles west from Tresmeer station on the Launceston and Wadebridge section of the London and South Western railway, 8 north-east from Camelford and 11 west-by-north from Launceston, in the North Eastern division of the county, hundred and petty sessional division of Lesnewth, union and county court district of Launceston, rural deanery of Trigg Major, archdeaconry of Bodmin and diocese of Truro. The church of St. Werburgh is a building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave of five bays, north aisle, north porch, dated 1601, and an embattled western tower of 3 stages, with pinnacles, containing 3 bells, dated respectively 1665, 1680 and 1714: there is a curious Norman font, and an inscribed stone to Anna Grigg, ob. 1688 : the church was restored in 1861, and has 150 sittings. The register dates from the year 1695. The living is a vicarage, incorporated with that of Treneglos, joint net yearly value £148, with 3 roods of glebe at Warbstow, in the gift of H.R.H. the Duke of Cornwall K.G. and held since 1895 by the Rev. Charles Edward Bowles Fripp M.A. of St. Mary Hall, Oxford, who resides at Treneglos. Warbstow barrow, an ancient and noted earthwork, is situated two furlongs north of the church, and 820 feet above the sea level; it consists of a double vallum, with two entrances, the inner area measuring 1,200 feet by 1,075 feet; from the summit Launceston may be seen. John Dingley esq. is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are John Bailey, William and John Drakes, Edward and Charles Spettigue, James Gynn and Charles Uglow esqrs. The soil is light; subsoil, various. The chief crops are wheat, oats and roots. The area is 4,151 acres; rateable value, £2,181; the population in 1891 was 396.

A School Board of 7 members was formed June 21, 1875, for the united district of Warbstow, Tremaine, Treneglos & Tresmeer, with Laneast contributory with 1 member; John Kittow, of Tremaine, attendance officer.

Board School (mixed), for 90 children, average attendance, 53 children; 9s. 10d. is received for the school from Mason’s charity, of Treneglos.
