Historical Description
WEEK ST. MARY is an agricultural village and parish, 9 miles south-west from Holsworthy, 10 ½ northwest from Launceston, 7 north from Tresmeer station on the London and South Western railway, and 7 south from Stratton, in the North Eastern division of the county, hundred, petty sessional division and union of Stratton, county court district of Holsworthy, rural deanery of Stratton, archdeaconry of Bodmin and diocese of Truro. By the Local Government Board Order No. 14,848, dated March 24th, 1884, Knowle farm was transferred to Jacobstow and a part of Jacobstow near Higher Exe to Week St. Mary. The church of St. Mary is a building of stone and granite in the Early English and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave of five bays, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing 5 bells, all cast in 1731: in the north aisle, once a chantry dedicated to St. John the Baptist, a piscina and fragments of an altar remain: in the north wall are the rood loft stairs: the font is octangular, and of Late Perpendicular date: the tower, built in 1543, is of granite ashlar, and has a large canopied niche on the south side: there are memorials to George Rolle, 1602; John Mill, 1631; Edward Mill, 1610; Margery, wife of John Gayer, gent. 1679, and others; and in the north aisle is a memorial window to Mrs. Hopkins, wife of the Rev. G. H. Hopkins, a former rector: the church was restored in 1880 at a cost of £1,800, and in 1887 the tower was thoroughly renovated and the bells recast, at a cost of £168, and is now (1897) again being repaired: there are 185 sittings. The register dates from the year 1602. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £268, including go acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, and held since 1895 by the Rev. William Wilkinson B.A. and late scholar of Christ College, Cambridge. Here is a Free Methodist chapel. The Bible Christian chapel, built in 1845, and re-erected in 1888 at a cost of £450, is a building of stone with cement facing in the Gothic style, and will seat 80 persons. The poor have the rent of 2 roods of land, producing £2 10s. annually. Fairs are held here on July 29th, September 15th and the Wednesday before Christmas Day. This was a place of considerable importance in earlier times, and its history is rendered interesting through an incident which occurred in the 14th century: it is related that Thomas Bunsby, a London merchant, chancing to meet with Thomasine Bonaventure, a cottage girl of this place, entered into conversation with her, and eventually took her to London with him, where she became a member of his household, and on the death of his wife he married her: after having been twice a widow, she married Sir John Percival, Lord Mayor of London in 1498, whom she also survived, and eventually returned to her native village and spent the remainder of her life in acts of benevolence; amongst others she founded a chantry, in connection with which there was a seminary, noted for the excellence of its education, and regarded as a centre of learning for this part of the country until the transfer of its privileges to Launceston after the suppression of religious houses; a portion of an embattled wall, still in existence, and called the “college,” is supposed to be the remains of Dame Thomasine Percival's chantry. At Ashbury is an ancient earthwork, with an area of about 4 acres; and at Swannacot wood, an entrenchment of oval shape, measuring about 150 by 130 feet. The manorial rights are divided. John Ward Spear esq. of Eastcott, Milton Abbot; Edward Mucklow esq. of Whitstone Head, Holsworthy; Cecil Bray esq. of Langford Hill, Marhamchurch, and the Rev. William Cowlard M.A. rector of Marhamchurch, are the principal landowners. The soil is chiefly clay; subsoil, the same. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and roots. The area is 5,830 acres; rateable value, £2,946; the population in 1891 was 548.
BAKESDOWN, 2 ½ miles north-east, and WEEK ORCHARD, 2 ½ miles north, are hamlets.
A School Board of 5 members was formed Aug. 24, 1874; T. G. Dennis is chairman & clerk of the board.
Board School (mixed), built in 1876, for 90 children; average attendance, 80.
