Historical Description

WHITSTONE is a parish and village on the river Tamar, 6 miles south-west from Holsworthy station on the London and South Western railway, 8 south from Stratton and 9 north-west from Launceston, in the North Eastern division of the county, hundred, petty sessional division and union of Stratton, county court district of Holsworthy, rural deanery of Stratton, archdeaconry of Bodmin and diocese of Truro. The new railway from Holsworthy to Bude will pass near Beville's Hill, in the parish, and a station will be erected close by. The church of St. Anne is an ancient building of stone with granite dressings in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave of five bays, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower of four stages, with pinnacles, containing 5 bells, all re-cast in 1776: at the west end of the nave is a memorial to John Cornishe, formerly rector of this parish, 1525, and there are others to the Hill and Symons families, 1650—82; Magdalene Spoure, 1687, and to Honner, wife of John Gayer, 1690: the organ was presented by Edward Mucklow esq. at a cost of £240: in the north wall is a brass to Mrs. Mucklow, erected in 1889: the font, of Norman date, is circular and adorned with foliated ornament: two stained windows were erected in 1895 : the church was thoroughly restored in 1881—2, at a cost of £1,400, and affords sittings for 200 persons: in the churchyard, which is entered through a handsome lych-gate, is an ancient well, inclosed within a canopied Gothic arch, and at the back is a niche. The register dates from the year 1663. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £191, including 37 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of and held since 1864 by the Rev. Robert Hawker Kingdon M.A. of Pembroke College, Oxford. The Bible Christian chapel here, built in 1864, was rebuilt in 1885, at a cost of £150, and will seat 180 persons. Robyn’s charity is of the yearly value of 10s. Hilton Wood Castle is an ancient earthwork, oval in form and measuring 215 by 170 feet, with a bank 14 feet high, and a ditch 12 feet in width. Whitstone Head, the seat of Edward Mucklow esq. J.P. lord of the manor and the principal landowner, is a handsome modern mansion of red brick, built on an eminence commanding extensive views of the surrounding country. The soil is chiefly clay; subsoil, the same. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and roots. The parish contains 4,080 acres ; rateable value, £2,252; the population in 1891 was 394.

A School Board of 5 members was formed August 21, 1874 ; the Rev. R. H. Kingdon M.A. clerk to the board.
