Historical Description

ADDINGHAM is an ecclesiastical parish, 6 miles north-north-east of Penrith, bounded on the west by the river Eden and on the east by Hartside Fell. There is no village or township of Addingbam; the parish was formerly divided into four townships, viz., Glassonby, Little Salkeld, Hunsonby with Winskill, and Gamblesby with Unthank, but under the provisions of the “Local Government Act, 1894” these were made separate parishes for civil purposes; the parish is in the mid division of the county, Leathward petty sessional division, union and county court district of Penrith, rural deanery of Penrith east, and archdeaconry and diocese of Carlisle. The parish church of St. Michael, locally in the civil parish of Glassonby, and half a mile from the village of that name, is a small and plain but ancient edifice of stone, in the Norman style, with some square-headed Perpendicular windows, and consists of chancel, nave, south-west porch, and a western bell-gable with two bells. The east window and two others are filled with stained glass, and the credence table is formed from part of an ancient cross; the chancel arch is of Norman date; the communion plate includes a silver chalice, dated 1612; on the floor is a brass to Charles Smalwood esq. LL.B. d. 31 Dec. 1716. The church was repaired in 1839, at a cost of £500, and affords 200 sittings. In the churchyard stands the fine head of an ancient cross, recovered from the bed of the river. The registers date from the year 1604. The living is a vicarage, with Gamblesby annexed, net yearly value £322, including 306 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Carlisle, and held sines 1891 by the Rev Thomas Wilkinson Stephenson B.A. of St. Catherine’s College, Cambridge, who resides at Little Salkeld. The celebrated Dr. William Paley, archdeacon of Carlisle, sub-dean of Lincoln, and author of the “Evidences of Christianity's and “Horae Paulinae,” was vicar here from 1792 to 1795; he died 25 May, 1805. The poor’s land of 6a. 3r. 7p. purchased in 1749 from ancient poor stock, belonging to the parish, together with Lowson’s dole of £1 a year, left in 1735 by Thomas Lowson as a rent charge on lands in Little Salkeld, produces £13 yearly, which is distributed in money by the vicar and churchwarden. Joseph Hutchinson, founder of the Hunsonby School, left an estate now of 48 acres at Winskill, for the benefit of the poor; the rents, amounting to £83 yearly, are distributed in money; he also bequeathed a sum of £10 to the poor of Hunsonby, and the interest is thus applied. The poor’s stock of Gamblesby quarter, amounting to 10s. a year, if now existing, goes to the school. The population of the whole parish in 1891 was 777.

Schools

Free School, Maughanby (boys & girls), founded in 1634 by the Rev. Edward Mayplett, vicar of Addingham, 1591—1636, and prebendary of Carlisle, and endowed by him with 70 acres of land and a house. The school was rebuilt in 1868 with about £600, the proceeds of the sale of 30 acres of land The endowment now (1896) consists of 80 acres of land producing £98 a year, but a sum of £15 per annum is paid to the governors of Melmerby school, and £25 for “Mayplett Exhibition.” In 1882 a revised scheme for the management of the school was issued by the Charity Commissioners, and it is now under the control of a body of 8 governors. The school will hold 128 children; average attendance, 35.

A School Board of 5 members was formed for Gamblesby, 24th October, 1873. Thomas Gill is chairman; J. Cowen, hon. clerk to the board.

Board School (mixed), Gamblesby, built in 1874, at a cost of £470, for 60 children; average attendance, 37. It was endowed in 1874 by W. Harrison esq. of London, and a native of Gamblesby, with £30, the interest of £600, invested in the French Rentes.

Endowed School, Hunsonby, founded under the will of Mr. Joseph Hutchinson, yeoman, who died in 1726 and left 50 acres of land to be applied, at the decease of his mother, who died about 1765, to the endowment of a school for the education of children belonging to this parish; the endowment in 1868, consisted of about 50 acres of land, now (1896) producing about £70; the school will hold 70 children; average attendance, 50.
