Historical Description

The village of Aspatria contains 237 houses and 1220 inhabitants, the labourers in the coal-pits included. Near this is Bragton Hall, the seat of Sir G. Lawson, Bart. Nearly 200 yards north of the village is Beacon Hill, on the summit of which there was formerly a tumulus that contained a number of Roman antiquities, represented in the tenth volume of the Archaeologia.

In the year 1790, a barrow was opened, which stood about 200 yards north of this village, in which a human skeleton was found, which measured seven feet from the head to the ankle bone; the feet were rotted off; on the left side was a broad sword, five feet in length, the guard of which was ornamented with flowers of silver, inlaid; and on the right side lay a dirk or dagger, one foot and a half in length, the handle of which was likewise ornamented with silver. Part of a gold buckle, an ornament for the end of a belt, a piece of which adhered to it; a broken battle axe, a bit, in the shape of a modern snaffle, and part of a spur, were likewise discovered in this sepulchre.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

ASPATRIA is a parish, extensive township and large village, bounded on the south by the river Ellen, and on the west by the sea; the village, situated on the main road, between Maryport and Carlisle, has a station on the Maryport and Carlisle railway, and is 8 miles south-west from Wigton, 8 east-by-north from Maryport, 9 north from Cockermouth and 19 south-west from Carlisle, in the Northern division of the county, ward and petty sessional division of Atterdale-below-Derwent, Wigton union and county court district, rural deanery of Maryport, and archdeaconry and diocese of Carlisle. The village is lighted with gas from works, the property of a company, and is said to derive its name either from Gospatrick, a former lord of Allerdale or from Aspatrick (an equivalent of St. Patrick), a predecessor of St. Kentigern; but the present form of the name is stated to have come into use only within the last century.

The township is governed by an Urban District Council of 7 members, formed under the provisions of the “Local Government Act, 1894,” in place of the Local Board which had existed from 1892. The church of St. Kentigern, rebuilt in 1846—8, is an edifice of stone, now chiefly in the Early English style, but incorporating portions of the ancient Norman church, and consists of chancel, clerestoried nave, aisles, vestry, south porch, and an embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing a clock and one bell: the former chancel arch, a fine example of Norman work, is now built into the tower; there is also a good Norman doorway, and the font is of the same period. In the chancel is a marble tablet to Wilfrid Lawson, d. 1710, and there are various memorials to the Musgraves of Hayton, including a panelled altar-tomb with inscriptions and shields of arms, and marble tablets to Sir Richard Musgrave M.P. 3rd bart. d. 1710, and Dorothy his wife, d. 1718; Sir Richard Musgrave bart. d. 1739; Sir William Musgrave, 6th bart. d. 1800, and Anne his wife, d. 31 Dec, 1812. Built into the wall of the new vestry are portions of two sides of an elaborately carved house-shaped tomb; the sloping sides of the roof imitate tile-work of various patterns, bearing the Triquetra ornament, and the ridge is enriched with a double zig-zag interlaced; there are 500 sittings. In the churchyard stands the shaft of an early cross of red sandstone; it is 4 feet 6 inches high, with a socket stone 30 by 26 inches, and is carved on all sides with knot-work, there are also two fragments of another cross shaft of white sandstone, carved with scrolls and interlaced ornament. The register dates from the year 1660. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £390, with 180 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Carlisle, and held since 1885 by the Rev. William Slater Calverley, of Oxford University, surrogate, and F.S.A. There is a large Congregational chapel, built in 1827, a Baptist chapel, erected in 1886 and a Primitive Methodist chapel built in 1896. The Market hall, in the Market place, is a building of local red stone, and is also used for meetings, theatrical entertainments &c. The market day is Thursday. Noble Temple, built in 1872, is used for meetings and entertainments. There are reading rooms at Harriston, erected in 1891 by Mr. Joseph Harris, for the use of the colliers and others employed at his collieries; they comprise reading, smoking and billiard rooms, and are well supplied with newspapers and periorical literature. The Aspatria Reading and Recreation Rooms, erected in 1894 by a Limited Company, form a handsome building of native stone, and comprise reading, billiard and game rooms, baths and refreshment rooms. The Cumberland Bank and the Bank of Whitehaven both have branches here. There are two co-operative societies and a cricket club. In the parish are extensive coal mines, stone quarries, saw mills, &c. At High gill, 2 miles north-west, are traces of earthworks, called “The Batteries,” and on Beacon Hill, 200 yards north, a skeleton and arms were found in the last century within a barrow.
