Historical Description
BEAUMONT is a small parish, township and village on the west or left bank of the river Eden, ¾ mile from Kirk-Andrews station on the North British railway and 4 north-west of Carlisle, and derives its name from its pleasing situation on a fair hill, affording a good prospect in every direction. It is in the northern division of the county, Cumberland ward and petty sessional division, union and county court district of Carlisle, rural deanery of Carlisle north and archdeaconry and diocese of Carlisle. The church of St. Mary the Virgin, which occupies the site of a Roman mile-castle in the middle of the village, is an edifice of Norman origin, constructed in part with Roman materials, and consisting of chancel, nave, south porch, vestry on the north side, and a western turret containing one bell. The stained east window is a memorial to Mr. Thomas Hodgson, d. 1871; the piscina, made and erected by Mr. David Brown in 1872 is a copy of a 14th century example, and takes the place of the older one, which was much dilapidated. In 1828 the church had a chest with three locks, but this seems to have disappeared; in the church is preserved a Roman quern, for some time used as a font. The church was renovated in 1784, and in 1888 was restored at a cost of £800; there are now 130 sittings. In the church are two grave slabs of the 14th century, dug up about 1872; one of these bears a carved book with clasps. The registers date from the year 1692. The living is a rectory, annexed since 1892 to that of Kirk-Andrews-upon-Eden; joint net yearly value, £215, with 90 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Earl of Lonsdale, and held, since 1886, by the Rev. Thomas Owen Sturkey M.A. of Pembroke College, Cambridge, who resides at Kirk-Andrews. The tithes for the united parishes were commuted in 1827. The parish is entitled to share with Kirk-Andrews-on-Eden in the interest of £50, left by Thomas Pattinson in 1785 for teaching poor children. In 1322, Robert Bruce, crossing Eden by an ancient ford or “wath” (Scand vad.), encamped here for five days; and at an earlier date (1307), Edward I. passed through the place (4th July), on his march to Burgh-on-Sands, where he died in camp on 7th. July, three days subsequently. During the Scottish rising of 1745, a Highland force, led by Prince Charles Edward, also forded the Eden, and proceeding through Beaumont, established themselves south of Carlisle. In 1884 (Dec. 26), a great hoard of English silver coins, groats, half-groats, pennies, &c. of the 14th century, was found here by two labourers, at a spot 43 yards west of one of the roads to the north of the village, and four yards north a small stream flowing eastward into the Eden; the coin appeared to have been buried in an iron or iron-bound box, and were estimated at 6,000 in number, but owing to their having been speedily parted, the exact number was not ascertained; the earliest date met with was that of Henry III. At Sandsfield, formerly a small port, a hoard of silver coins of the first three Edwards was found about 1837. Built into a wall near the church is a stone, recovered from the river Eden, about 1837, by Mr. Thomas Hodgson, and bearing an inscription relating to the 5th cohort of the 20th legion. The great Roman wall crossed this parish by making a considerable detour in its course from Kirk-Andrews to Burgh-upon-Sands, and the fosse, before reaching Beaumont, is well defined. In the village is a well, called St. Ann’s. The manor formerly belonged to the Bruns, lords of Bowness, but is now, and was before 1380, part of the barony of Burgh. The commons in this barony were enclosed about 1680. The Earl of Lonsdale and the Rector are lords of the manor. Mr. Robert Hodgson, Mrs. Rickerby, Miss Hodgson, Mr. Richard Hodgson, of Burgh-by-Sands, G. H. H. Oliphant-Ferguson, esq. of Broad Field House, Mrs. Borthwick, of Burgh-by-Sands, Miss Norman, of Burgh-by-Sands, Mr. Thomas Robinson, of Cargo, and George William Mounsey-Heyshaw esq. of Castletown, are the principal landowners. The soil is loamy; subsoil clay; opposite to Rockliff is some fine holm land, producing grain, clover, and grass. The chief crops are barley and oats. The area is 1,537 acres of land, 14 of water, 66 of tidal water, and 22 of foreshore; rateable value, £2,030; the population in 1891 was 252.
This place was included in the Kirk-Andrews-upon-Eden United School district, formed 30th December, 1874. The children attend the school at Kirk-Andrews-upon-Eden.
