Historical Description

The manor of Beckermont, on which is a romantic hill called Wotobank, the derivation of which name is said to have arisen from the following tale, which furnished Mrs. Cowley with the subject of her ingenious poem of Edwina. Tradition relates that "a lord of Beckermont, with his lady, and servants, were one time hunting the wolf; during the chase the lady was missing; and after a long and painful search, her body was found lying on this hill, or bank, slain by a wolf, who was in the very act of ravenously tearing it to pieces. The sorrow of the husband, in the first transports of his grief, was expressed by the words "Woe to this bank !"

"Woe to thee, bank!" th’ attendants echoed round, And pitying shepherds caught the grief-fraught sound, Thus to this hour, through ev’ry changing age, Through ev’ry year’s still every-varying stage,

The name remains, and Wotobank is seen From ev’ry mountain bleak, and valley green;

Dim Skiddaw views it from its monstrous height, And eagles mark it in their dizzy flight.

Not rocks and cataracts, and alps alone,

Point out the spot, and make its sorrows known;

For faithful lads ne’er pass, nor tender maid,

But the soft rite of tears is duly paid;

Each can the story to the trav’ller tell,

And on the sad disaster pitying dwell.

Edwina.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

BECKERMET, or Beckermont St. John, is a parish, township, and large village, deriving its name, as it is believed, from its position at the confluence of the Blackbeck and Kirkbeck rivulets. It has a station on the Whitehaven, Cleator and Egremont junction railway, and is 2 ½ miles south from Egremont, and 8 south by east from Whitehaven, in the western division of the county, petty sessional division and ward of Allerdale-above-Derwent, union and county court district of Whitehaven, rural deanery of Gosforth, archdeaconry of Furness, and diocese of Carlisle. The river is here crossed by a bridge. The church of St. John, beautifully situated on a hill, and rebuilt in 1810, was again re-built in 1878, as a cost of £2,866, chiefly raised by subscription, and is now an edifice of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch, and a western turret with spire, containing one bell. There are 250 sittings. The registers date from the year 1733. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £155, with residence, in the gift of Messrs. S. and J. Lindow, and held since 1870 by the Rev. William Gabbott. Richardson's and Birley’s charities, bequeathed in 1811 and 1838, consists of £164 12s. Consols, producing £4 8s. yearly, which is distributed in money. There are charities of £150 yearly value. Lady le Fleming, of Dalemaine, Rangiora, Christchurch, New Zealand, is lady of the manor, Henry Gaitskell, esq. with a number of smaller proprietors, are the principal landowners. The soil is of a light loamy description near the sea; towards the eastern mountains the land is cold and barren; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley, and turnips. The area is 933 acres of land and 13 of water; rateable value, £5,164; the population in 1891 was 682.

The children of this parish attend the school at Beckermet St. Bridgets.

Kelly's Directory of Cumberland (1897)

BECKERMET ST. BRIDGET, with the hamlets of Sella Field, Yotton Fews and Skalderskew, is a parish, township and village, separated only by the Kirkbeck rivulet from Beckermet St. John, in which parish there is a station on the Whitehaven, Cleator and Egremont railway. The village is about 3 miles south-east of Egremont, and 8 south from Whitehaven, in the Western division of the county, petty sessional division and ward of Allerdale-above-Derwent, union and county court district of Whitehaven, rural deanery of Gosforth, archdeaconry of Furness and diocese of Carlisle. The parish from east to west is nearly 8 miles long, its breadth in no part exceeding 1 ½ miles. The village is practically a continuation of Little Beckermet-or Beckermet St. John, as it is generally termed-and consists chiefly of remarkably clean whitewashed dwellings, with other modern and more substantially built residences of stone. The church of St. Bridget, situated in a lonely spot about half a mile from the village, is an ancient edifice of stone in the Early English style, with a western turret containing 2 bells, and affords about 100 sittings: this church is now principally used for burials, the ordinary services being held at the church of St. Bridget, Calder Bridge, but divine service is occasionally held here during the summer. In the churchyard stands the shafts of two early stone crosses, with carved work and inscriptions. The registers date from the year 1675. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £176, with 18 acres of glebe, in the gift of T. Rymer esq. and held since 1895 by the Rev. John Raby M.A, Clare College, Cambridge, who is also vicar of and resides at Calder Bridge. This manor formerly belonged to Sir Richard Hutton, Justice of the Common Pleas, 1617—38, who exchanged it for Goldsborow, in Yorkshire; it now belongs to General Wyndham. One estate called Calder Lordship, in which the old church is situated, is held under the Earl of Lonsdale.

Parish School (mixed), built in 1858, & enlarged in 1872 for 140 children; average attendance, 80.
