Historical Description

BOLTON is an extensive parish, and is divided into Bolton Low Side (or Low Bolton), and Bolton High, (or High Bolton), with Quarry Hill; the former is 2 miles south-east from Mealsgate station, on a loopline of the Maryport and Carlisle railway, 4 ½ south from Wigton, 5 to 8 from Aspatria, 12 north-east from Cockermouth, in the Mid division of the county, Allerdale below Derwent ward, Wigton petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Wigton, and archdeaconry and diocese of Carlisle. The river Waver takes its rise in this parish at a place called Catland Fell, a lofty eminence which commands extensive views of the Solway Frith and the Scottish hills. The High Side of this parish, including the village called Bolton Gate, is on the north bank of the Ellen, where there is a remarkable spring rising out of the limestone rocks, and strong enough to turn a mill. The church of All Saints, originally Norman, appears to have been rebuilt towards the close of the 14th century, and not improbably by Ralph (Nevill), 4th Baron Nevill of Raby, and 1st Earl of Westmorland, who died in 1425. It is an edifice of stone, in a species of Romanesque, suggested doubtless by continental examples, and consists of a long and narrow chancel, nave, transepts, north and south porches, sacristy, and a western turret, containing 1 bell. The most striking feature of the building is the peculiar stone-vaulted roof of the nave, possibly suggested by French examples, and resembling in design the pointed barrel arch over the choir of Roslyn chapel in Scotland, it originally had no outer roof of timber work, but was probably covered with slabs laid over the external surface of the vaulting; the chancel has on the south side a piscina, a priest’s doorway, and a low side window, with traces of shutter fastenings; the transepts are half vaulted, and each retains a piscina and aumbrey: a stair turret with hexagonal stone capping, leads to the roof, which has a wide walk all round, protected by a parapet, and continued across the west end, where the gable is set back for this purpose, and skilfully supported on interior corbels: there are traces of the doorway to the rood loft, and in the sacristy is a hagioscope, now blocked: the window tracery is peculiar and partakes of the Scottish character. On the north wall of the chancel are tablets to the Rev. Daniel Fisher, rector, d. 1799, and the Rev. Robert Watts, rector, d. 1822. On the south side are two stained windows and a tablet to the Moore family of Whitehall, Allhallows. The stained east window was erected by the Foster family of Killhow, Boltons. In the south transept is a memorial window to the Rev. John Sherwen M.A. d. 1861. The south window of the nave is a memorial to the Rev. William Mundell Gunson, fellow and tutor of Christ’s College, Cambridge, d. 1883. At the west end is a memorial window to William and Margaret Coulthart, of Coulthart, placed in 1860. In 1884 a handsome oak reredos was erected. The communion plate includes an Elizabethan silver cup, the upper part of which is made of a sheet of silver, rolled in a conical form, and then welded to the lower portion; the date is about 1565: there are 250 sittings. In 1885 the churchyard was enlarged by the addition of land presented by the Bell family. The registers date from the year 1603. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £350, with 97 acres of glebe, and residence, in the gift of the Earl of Lonsdale, and held since 1888 by the Rev. John Ewbank B.A. of University College, Durham. The rectory house stands about 150 yards south of the church, near the banks of the river Ellen, and was largely rebuilt of stone in 1889. At the east end are remains of a peel tower into which the cattle were driven for safety, during the border raids of former times. At Bolton Low Houses is a mission room in connection with the parish church, built of stone at a cost of £380, and seating 120 persons. At Boltongate is a reading room, built in 1885 at the expense of the Bell family. Scott’s charity of 12s. yearly, for distribution in money, was paid regularly until 1878, but is now lost. Coal and lime are found in abundance in this parish, and a copper mine was formerly wrought. Bolton Park, now occupied by Mr. John Douglas, farmer, is a beautiful mansion, delightfully situated, and commanding varied and extensive prospects. Joseph Harris, Samuel Porter Foster esq. William Parken Moore esq. and Messrs. S. & J. Lindow, of Chiswick, Middlesex, are the principal landowners, and Lord Leconfield and the rector are lords of the manor. The soil is of a mixed nature, producing good crops of wheat, oats and barley; subsoil, lime and freestone, in some instances clay and sharp gravel. The area of Bolton High is 3,875 acres. The area of Bolton Low or Bolton Wood with Quarry Hill is 4,570 acres; rateable value, £7,402 for the parish. The population in 1891 was 936. Bolton Low Side includes the small hamlets of Bolton Wood, Newlands Row, Mealsgate, Low Houses and Thornthwaite, and several dispersed dwellings. At Mealsgate there is a station on the Bolton loop of the Maryport and Carlisle railway.

National School, Low Side (mixed & infants), built in 1853 for 100 children; average attendance, 76.
