Historical Description

The township of Bootle is pleasantly situated, containing 120 inhabited houses, and 656 inhabitants. The Church is ancient, and contains an octangular font of black marble; on each side of which are two shields, raised from the plane, inscribed with a Latin sentence in Old English and Saxon characters. This inscription contains the words of baptism, In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

About one mile to the south-east of this village is Blackcomb, a mountain, which from its standing near the sea, and having the level counties of Lancashire and Cheshire on its south east side, may, in a clear day, be seen from Talk-on-the-Hill, in Staffordshire, nearly 100 miles distant. On the summit of this mountain is a capacious cavity, that appears to have been the crater of a volcano, though a small rivulet springs from the centre of the cavity.

Several Druidical circles, and other remains of antiquity, are to he seen in the neighbourhood of this mountain: the most remarkable of which is the

Druidical temple called Sunken Kirk, situated in the level part of a wet meadow, about a mile east from Blackcomb. It is a circle of very large stones, and is thus described in Mr. Gough’s Addition to Camden:—"At the entrance are four large stones, two placed on each side at the distance of six feet; the largest, on the left-hand side, is five feet six inches in circumference. Through this you enter into a circular area, 29 yards by 30. The entrance is nearly south-east: on the north or right hand side, is a huge stone of a conical form, its height nearly nine feet. Opposite the entrance is another large stone, which has once been erect, but is now fallen within the area; its length is eight feet. To the left hand, to the south-west, is one, in height seven feet, in circumference, eleven feet nine inches. The altar probably stood in the middle, as there are some stones still to be seen, though sunk deep in the earth. The circle is nearly complete, except on the western side, where some stones are wanting; the larger stones are about 31 or 32 in number. The outward part of the circle, upon the sloping ground, is surrounded with a buttress, or rude pavement of smaller stones, raised about half a yard from the surface of the earth. The situation and aspect of the Druidical temple, near Keswick, is in every respect similar to this, except the rectangular recess formed by 10 large stones, which is peculiar to that at Keswick; but upon the whole, I think the preference will be given to this, as the stones in general appear much larger, and the circle more entire.’’

About four miles to the north-east of Bootle is Ulpha Park, originally enclosed by the Huddlestons, as a place of security for deer, and extends from the channel of the river Duddon to Devock Lake.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

BOOTLE is an ancient market town, a township and parish, the head of a union and petty sessional division, with a station 1 ¼ miles north-west on the Furness railway, 6 miles south-south-east from Ravenglass, and 12 west from Broughton, and is in the western division of the county, ward of Allerdale-above-Derwent, county court district of Whitehaven, rural deanery of Gosforth, archdeaconry of Furness, and diocese of Carlisle. The town is near a small stream called the Annas, and about 2 miles from the sea. The church of St. Michael is an edifice of rubble cobbles, with red sandstone dressings, in the Early English style, and consists of chancel, nave, transepts, west porch, and a western tower, 90 feet in height, and containing 3 bells. On the north wall of the chancel is a brass to Bridget Fox, widow, daughter of Richard Parker, of Tarn, by whose munificent gift of £1,500 the restoration of the church in 1891 was principally effected; on the south wall is a brass with effigy of a knight in armour, to Sir Hugh Askew, ob. 2 March, 1562, and knighted at the battle of Pinkie, or Musselburgh, 10 Sept. 1547; there is also a shield bearing a bugle horn, and the inscription “J. H.”; and another with the initials “R. B.”; in the vestry are hatchments for the Rev. Richard Hutton B.D. rector, d. 1 July, 1804, the Rev. Daniel Steele, rector, d. 1764, and the Rev. John Wennington B.A. d. 1764; on the north wall of the nave is a brass to Thomas Grice esq. of Cross House; the font has an octagonal basin, with the inscription “In Nomine Patris, Filii, et Spiritus Sancti,” in old English characters; six of the sides are ornamented with quatrefoils, and the other two bear shields with the arms of the Huddlstone family. The church was repaired and transepts added in 1837; the rebuilding of the tower, begun in 1870, was completed in 1880; in 1888 the chancel was new-roofed, new altar rails fixed, and an organ erected at a cost of £300; and in 1891, a new roof was put on the nave, the interior re-seated, and choir stalls and a pulpit of oak erected; in the course of excavating for the foundations of the tower, six skeletons of unusual size were met with, lying north and south; the cost of restoration since 1893 has amounted to £3,300: the church affords 400 sittings. The registers date from the year 1655. The living is a rectory, tithe rent charge £450, average £320, gross yearly value £350, with residence and 14 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Earl of Lonsdale, and held since 1878 by the Rev. Shepley Watson Watson S.C.L. of St. John's College, Cambridge, and L.Th. of Durham University. The rectory, nearly adjoining the church, is a neat building of stone, in the Gothic style. The Congregational chapel, as appears from an inscription over the entrance, was originally founded by Mr. Joseph Whitridge, of London, in 1786, for Lady Huntingdon’s connexion; it is endowed with £52 per annum, in the hands of trustees, and will seat 200 persons. Near the church are the remains of the ancient Market Cross, which can hardly be said now to be more than a pile of stones lying closely together. About the year 1347 a market was granted to John de Hudleston, and held on Wednesday, and afterwards on Saturday, but has now become obsolete. Cattle fairs are held annually on the 26th April and 24th September-the latter is but thinly attended; hirings for servants take place on the Friday before Whitsuntide and the Friday before the 11th of November.

Charities:-Singleton, Hodgson, and Hutton’s charity consists of about £480 in bank and other stock, now (1897) producing £20 12s. yearly for educational purposes, and applied to Hycemoor school. Hodgson's of £20, and Wennington’s of 10s. yearly, are distributed in money to the poor on St. Thomas’s day. Shaw’s consisting of £290 in stock, given by deed in 1830, by Captain J. Shaw, produces about £8 14s. for educational purposes, and is applied to the parochial school. Francis Ellerton's bequest of about £64 in Consols, left in 1838, yields £1 18s. a year, which is assigned to the Hycemoor school. Henry Parker, of Townhead, in 1873, gave £100 for the benefit of Capt. Shaw’s school, and £100 for Hycemoor school. In 1892, Thomas Grice, of Cross House, gave £500 to Capt. Shaw’s school, and £500 to the Hycemoor school.

There is a branch here of the Cumberland Union Banking Co. Limited, open twice a week.

Seaton Nunnery, or, as it is now called, Seaton Hall, about 1 mile distant, is the property of E. W. Wakefield esq. of Kendal, but is now let to Robert Mason esq. of Marsh Grange, Kirkby-in-Furness, as a farmhouse, Mr. Wm. Grice being bailiff resident. Here was once a nunnery of the Benedictine order, founded before 1227 by one of the lords of Millom, and dedicated to St. Leonard. At the Dissolution the revenues were estimated at about £13, and in 1542 the property was granted to Sir Hugh Askew kt. Excepting three lancets of the 13th century, forming the east windows of the chapel, but few traces are now left. The Earl of Lonsdale is lord of the manor and E. W. Wakefield esq. lord of the manor of Seaton; Rd.
