Historical Description

At the head of Borrowdale, to the east of a steep mountain, are the famous black-lead mines of which the black-lead pencils are made; known in France by the appellation of Crayon d’ Angleterre. The summit of one of these mountains Mr. Smith, a native of Cumberland, thus describes:—"Not a herb was to be seen, but wild savin growing in the fissures of the naked rocks; while the horrid projection of vast promontories, the vicinity of the clouds, the thunder of the explosions in the slate quarries, the distance of the plain below, and the mountains heaped on mountains piled around us, desolate and waste, appeared like the ruins of a world we had survived, and inspired such ideas of horror as are not to be expressed.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

BORROWDALE is a township and parish, formed May 19, 1865, out of Crosthwaite parish, and extends from about 2 to 8 miles south from Keswick station, on the Cockermouth, Keswick and Penrith railway, in the Mid division of the county, ward of Allerdale-above-Derwent, petty sessional division and county court district of Keswick, union of Cockermouth, rural deanery of Keswick, archdeaconry of Westmorland and diocese of Cailisle. The church, midway between the hamlets of Rosthwaite and Stonethwaite, is a building of stone, in a plain Gothic style, with a chancel added in 1873, at a cost of £730, and consists of chancel, nave, porch, and a turret containing one bell: the east window is a lancet one of three lights of stained glass, and there are 200 sittings. The registers of baptisms and burials date from 1775; and of marriages from 1865. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value about £120, including 76 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the vicar of Crosthwaite, and held since 1892 by the Rev. Arthur John Heelis M.A. of Queen’s College, Oxford, who is also incumbent of Grange-in-Borrowdale in this parish. The valley of Borrowdale, one of the most beautiful and picturesque in the whole Lake district, is bounded on the east and west by the Wythburn and Buttermere fells and their accessory ranges, interrupted by romantic glens and ravines, through which, numerous creeks find their way into the river Derwent, which takes its rise on Bowfell, at a height of 2,014 feet, and flowing north, and at Seathwaite, slightly east passes Seatoller, Rosthwaite and Grange, and falls into the southern head of Derwentwater, nearly opposite the Lodore hotel. The Longstrath beck, rising about half a mile west of the surface of the Derwent, flows to the north-east, but turning sharply to the north-west at the foot of Greenup Ghyll, runs through Stonethwaite hamlet and joins the Derwent near Rosthwaite; the Watendlath beck, an independent stream, rises to the west in Blea Tarn (1,562 feet), and descending through a ravine and past the hamlet of Watendlath, eventually precipitates its waters down a rocky gorge, between the Gowder and Shepherd’s Crags, and thus creates, after heavy rains, the famous cascade of Lodore, so well known from Southey’s amusing rhymes. On the Derwent, near Seathwaite, is a plumbago mine, not now worked. Castle Crag is an eminence rising above the woods on the left or western bank of the Derwent, in Borrowdale proper, to a height of about 2,130 feet, and affords a fine view of the dale. The Boulder or Bowder stone, about half a mile further down, is an immense mass of basaltic or porphyritic greenstone rock, the top of which is accessible, and affords a fine prospect; it is 62 feet in length, and 36 feet in perpendicular height and 89 feet in circumference; and contains 23,090 cubic feet, weighing 1,971 tons, 13 cwt. There are four hotels and several lodging houses; the Lodore hotel, the Borrowdale hotel and the Royal Oak hotel, are all excellent houses.

Mission Room, Rosthwaite (unsectarian), Andrew Brown, missionary.

School (mixed), for 50 children; average attendance, 51.

Conveyance

During the season a coach runs several times daily from the Borrowdale hotel to Keswick station. Coaches also run from this hotel & from the Lodore & Royal Oak hotels, to Buttermere daily, during the season. An omnibus from the Lodore hotel meets the trains at the Keswick railway station, and also runs in connection with coaches from Windermere & Ambleside; & coaches run from the Royal Oak hotel, Rosthwaite, to Keswick station, & to all parts of the district when required.
