The village of Brigham is 2 ½ miles west from Cockermouth, 5 south-east from Maryport, and 5 north-east from Workington, with stations at Brigham and Broughton Cross, 1 mile distant, on the London and North-Western railway. The parish comprises the borough and parochial chapelry of Cockermouth, and five townships. The church of St. Bridget is an ancient edifice of stone, dating from about 1060, and consisting of chancel, nave of three bays, south porch, and a western tower containing 3 bells. Fragments of an undoubtedly earlier church have been discovered on the site. In the nave is some Norman arcading, and in the north wall some Early English windows have been inserted: the tower and the chancel arch and walls are also of this date, with Perpendicular windows inserted in the south wall: on the south side of the nave, entered by a somewhat later doorway and porch, is a Decorated chantry, built by Sir Thomas de Burgh in 1390: the chantry contains a mural tomb, three sedilia, and a piscina. The church was restored in 1864 and 1876, under the direction of Mr. William Butterfield, architect, of London, at a total cost of £4,500, and now affords 306 sittings. The register dates from the year 1564. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value, £235, with 64 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Earl of Lonsdale, and held since 1875 by the Rev. Jeremy Taylor Pollock M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. The vicarage house is near the church, and was erected in 1847. The Wesleyan chapel here was erected in 1856 and enlarged in 1883. There is also a reading room. Fletcher’s charity of £2 10s. yearly and Brown’s of 6s. 3d., both arising from invested, money, are distributed in money. Lady Senhouse’s benefaction, bequeathed in 1842, consists of £105 in Consols, producing about 3 guineas per annum. Here are several quarries of freestone and limestone. Lord Leconfield is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are the Earl of Lonsdale, who is lay rector; Major Humphrey Pocklington Senhouse, of Nether Hall, Maryport; William Fletcher, F.G.S. of Brigham Hill; Humphrey Patricius Senhouse esq. of Fitz House; Thomas Paisley, of Overend, Greysouthen; the trustees of the late William Cooke; Joseph Brown; the trustees of the late John Harris esq.; William Lamb; Mrs. Lowe, and the vicar. The soil is light and gravelly; subsoil, limestone. The chief crops are grass, oats and turnips. The area of the township is 1,732 acres of land and 27 of water; rateable value, £5,255; population in 1891 was 818 in the township and 1,363 in the parish.
