Historical Description

BROMFIELD or Broomfield by Holme Cultram, is a township and extensive parish, nearly 12 miles long and 3 in breadth, bounded on the north by the Solway Frith, in the northern and mid divisions of the county, in Allerdale-below-Derwent ward, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Wigton, rural deanery of Wigton and archdeaconry and diocese of Carlisle. The village of Bromfield is nearly in the centre of the parish, with a station on the Solway Junction section of the Maryport and Carlisle railway, and is 4 miles south from Abbey Town station on the North British railway, 5 ½ miles south-west from Wigton, and 4 north from Aspatria. The church of St. Mungo is an ancient building of stone, in the Norman and Early English styles, consisting of chancel, with two chapels, nave, north aisle, south porch, and a western turret containing 1 bell, and a small turret for a “Sanctus” bell: one of the chapels is dedicated to St. George and the other to the Blessed Virgin Mary: the interior contains antiquities dating from the 6th century: all the windows are stained, and of these eight were presented by the late Joseph Nelson esq. of Moor Row House, in this parish: the church affords 400 sittings. The registers date from the year 1654. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £285, in the gift of the Bishop of Carlisle and held since 1876 by the Rev. Richard Taylor, surrogate and official patron of Christ church, Allonby. Lord Leconfield is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is variable, but of a fertile nature; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats and green crop. The area is 3,027 acres; rateable value, £5,078; the population in 1891 was 384 in the township, and 1,555 in the parish.

Schools

Endowed Grammar School, Bromfield, founded by will, 7th May, in the year 1612, by Richard Osmotherley, mercer, of London, & a native of this place, for 15 poor children from Langrigg & Bromfield; the endowments, consisting of about seven acres of land, rents, annual payments, & investments, arising from Thomas Thomlinson’s charity, given, by will in 1798, now amount to £45 10s. yearly, & there is a house for the master; the school will hold 80 children, & has a full attendance: it is now worked under a new scheme of the Charity Commissioners.

Wadebridge, built in 1844, by the late Charles Ray esq. of Wigton, for 50 children; average attendance, 43.

Blencogo (mixed & infants), built in 1859 by G. Dixon esq. & endowed in that year by deed & in 1860 by will with £1,078 in consols, producing about £28 per annum; the school will hold 80 children, average attendance, 49.
