Historical Description
BUTTERMERE is a township and ecclesiastical parish on the Sad beck, between Crummock Water and the lake of its own name, 9 miles south-west from Keswick railway station, and 10 south-south-east from Cockermouth, in the Cockermouth division of the county, Derwent ward and petty sessional division, union of Cockermouth, and county court district of Cockermouth and Workington, rural deanery of Cockermouth, archdeaconry of Westmorland and diocese of Carlisle. The church, or chapel, rebuilt in 1841, at a cost of £300, by the Rev. Vaughan Thomas, M.A. chaplain of Corpus Christi college, Oxford, is a small and plain budding of stone, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch, and an open western turret containing two bells. In the chapel is a memorial window, erected in June, 1893, by the friends and parishioners, to the late Mrs. Attlee: there are 78 sittings. The registers of baptisms date only from 1801, previous to which date entries, and also of marriages and burials, were made at Lorton. The living is a vicarage; net yearly value, £89, with 28 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Earl of Lonsdale, and held since June, 1892, by the Rev. Henry Robert Dunlop, of St. Bees. Buttermere Lake is about 1 ¼ miles in length, nearly half a mile broad, and 90 feet deep. In form it is oblong, and sweeps round a promontory at its south end. The scenery around is grand in the extreme, especially on the west side; a long range of mountain slopes, rising to the lofty ridges of High Crag (2,443 feet) and High Style (2,643 feet), stretch from end to end of the lake, everywhere descending precipitously to its shores; on this side the cascade called Sour Milk Ghyll, issuing from Bleaberry tarn, rushes down the steep side of the mountain, appearing like a thread of silver, and forming a striking feature in the scene; on the eastern side of the lake the shore is well-wooded, and the fells rise finely towards Robinson (2,417 feet) and the mountain valleys, traversed by the feeders of the Newlands beck. The abrupt and rocky character of the precipices, and the wild and desolate looking mountains surrounding this lake, and almost overshadowing its waters, give it a somewhat gloomy appearance, which is heightened by the comparative absence of cultivation and of human habitations. A stream, flowing through the intervening meadows, connects this lake with Crummock Water. The lakes and streams here abound with pike, trout, char and perch; boats supplied by the hotels can always be obtained for use on Crummock water. Lord Leconfield is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are Walter J. Marshall, Miss Reed and Lord Leconfield. Blue slate is obtained in the township by the Buttermere Green Slate Co. Limited, of Keswick. The soil is generally light; subsoil, light and gravelly. The chief crops are grass, oats and roots. The area is 5,984 acres of land, and 867 of water; rateable value, £1,311; the population in 1891 was 97.
By Local Government Board Order 20,630 (March 24, 1887), High and Low Swinside, were transferred from Buttermere to Lorton township.
National School, erected about 1865, for 36 children; average attendance, 15.
Conveyance.-Coaches leave Keswick for here every day at 10 a.m. via Borrowdale & Honister Pass, arriving at 1 p.m., & returning at four by way of Newlands, in connection with the evening trains.
