Historical Description

Caldbeck, consisting of three townships; by the returns of 1821, the inhabited houses were ascertained to be 298, and the inhabitants 1588. Two thirds of this parish formerly consisted of mountains and moors; "Even the bleakest and most bare of these wastes, however, is not wholly useless; they afford a good summer pasture to between 7 and 8000 sheep, whose yearly produce of Iambs is estimated at upwards of 2000. In several of the estates, the flock of sheep is considered as a sort of heir loom, being sold and bought along with the land; and also leased out with it, when the land is let; the tenant being bound to deliver, on the termination of his lease, as many sheep as he receives, and of the same kind, age, and quality." This parish contains three meeting-houses for Quakers, who have been settled here almost as early as in any part of the kingdom; George Fox, their founder, residing near this place, at the time that he was employed in extending the belief of his peculiar tenets

A little below Caldbeck, in the bed of the river Caldew, is a singular natural curiosity, called the Houk; it is a waterfall in a narrow glen, which empties itself into a large bason, where it boils up in foaming eddies. A few feet from this bason is a singular excavation, called the Fairy Kettle; it is about 18 feet in diameter, and scooped out in nearly the shape of a huge cauldron, with an inside as smooth as if polished by a statuary,

Hesket-New-Market, so called from a market having been established there during the last century; it is a hamlet belonging to the parish of Caldbeck, and is a small but neat township.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

CALDBECK is a parish and village on the river Calder, 6 miles south from Curthwaite station on the Maryport and Carlisle railway, 8 miles south-east from Wigton, 13 south-by-west from Carlisle, and 15 north-west from Penrith, in the mid division of the county, Allendale-below-Derwent ward and petty sessional division, union and county court district of Wigton, and in the rural deanery of Wigton and archdeaconry and diocese of Carlisle, The church of St. Kentigern, originally Norman, but altered in the Late Perpendicular period, is a building of stone, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch, and an embattled western tower, containing 3 bells; there are 500 sittings. John Peel, the famous fox hunter, born 1777, died 1854, is buried in the churchyard, and his name has been perpetuated in one of the best known of all hunting songs. The registers date from the year 1640. The living is a rectory; net yearly value £375, with residence and 186 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Bishop of Carlisle, and held since 1877 by the Rev. Wm. Frederick Simpson M.A. of Worcester College, Oxford. There is a Wesleyan chapel, built in 1832, and two disused chapels belonging to the Society of Friends. Savage’s charity of about £2 yearly is for apprenticing; Lord Wharton’s, founded by Philip, 4th Baron Wharton, who died 5 February, 1695, is for the purchase of Bibles and prayer books for the poor; Simpson’s of £2 5s. yearly is also for Bibles and religious books; Bell’s charity, consisting of 2 acres of meadow land, now (1897) producing £2 10s. yearly, is for poor widows not in receipt of parochial relief. There is a manufactory for blankets and a large bobbin mill, with a water wheel 42 feet in diameter, and said to be the largest in England; here also is a small brewery. The neighbouring hills contain a variety of mineral productions, such as lead and copper ores, limestone and coal. The river Calderw affords trout fishing. About a quarter of a mile from the village, in a picturesque angle, is the cascade known as “The Howk,” crossed by a natural biridge of stone; the waters, dashing among the rocks, form two cascades, by the sides of which are singular excavations called the “Fairies’ Kirk” and the “Fairy Kettle.” At Haltcliffe Bridge the river takes a partially subterraneous course, which it continues for three miles, and then emerges at a place called “Spouts Dub.” A Roman road ran through the parish, passing Pikeless Gate and Wath. Lord Leconfield is lord of the manor and John Jennings esq. is the principal landowner. The soil is loam; subsoil, limestone. The chief crops are oats and cereals, mostly meadows. The area is 13,708 acres, of which not more than a third part is enclosed, and 34 of water; rateable value, £6,449; the population in 1801 was 1,068.

A School Board of 5 members was formed 25th March, 1873, & Castle Sowerby made contributory 10th July, 1874, sending two members; Rev. W. F. Simpson, chairman; W. H. Greenup, clerk to the board; Richard Nicholson, attendance officer, Caldbeck.
