Historical Description

CAMERTON is a large and scattered parish, comprising the townships of Camerton and High and Low Seaton, and is 2 ½ miles north-east from Workington, with a station on the Cockermouth, Keswick and Penrith section of the London and North Western railway. The parish is in the Cockermouth division of the county, ward of Allerdale-below-Derwent, Cockermouth union, county court district of Cockermouth and Worthington, rural deanery of Maryport, and archdeaconry and diocese of Carlisle. The parish is supplied with water from Crummock lake by the Cockermouth Rural District Council. The church of St. Peter, standing at the extreme end of the parish, is an ancient edifice of stone in the Early English style, and consists of chancel with chapel, nave, and a western tower with spire (added in 1855), and containing one bell: in the chapel is an altar tomb of stone, dated 1500, with the effigy of a warrior, commonly called “Black Tom of the North,” who was buried at Shap Abbey in Westmorland: the church was thoroughly restored in 1892, at a cost of £700, of which £350 was subscribed by Mrs. Isabella Falcon, of Bath; during the restoration several ancient stones were found: the communion plate includes a silver chalice, dated 1571: the church affords 165 sittings. The registers date from the year 1599. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £300, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Carlisle, and held since 1871 by the Rev. Thomas Hodges M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. Services are held in the Sunday school oil Sunday evenings. Camerton Hall, the seat of Mrs. Falcon, is a modern mansion standing in its own grounds, with a park of about 20 acres, and commanding extensive views of the country around. Mrs. Isabella Falcon, of Doynton house, Bath, and Mrs. Blanshard, of Southport, are the ladies of the manor, who ace also the principal landowners. The soil is heavy clay and sandy in places; subsoil, coal and fire-clay. The chief crops are oats, barley, turnips and potatoes. The Area of the township is 768 acres of land and 17 of water; rateable value, £2,164; the population in 1891 was 245.

National School, Seaton (mixed & infants) built in 187 for 330 children; average attendance, 162 boys & girls & 108 infants.
