There is also a Wesleyan Methodist chapel, erected in 1862. Cleator mills, belonging to Messrs. Ainsworth & Sons, afford employment to several hundred women and children, who are engaged in spinning flax and making linen threads and tapes. The mines give work to the men of the village.
