Historical Description
CROGLIN is a parish and village, comprising the townships, or manors, of Croglin and Newbiggin, and is bounded on, the south by the Croglin stream, which affords good trout fishing; it is 5 miles east from Armathwaite station, and 5 ½ north-east from Lazonby station, both on the Midland railway, 13 north from Penrith and 5 north from Kirkoswald, and is in the mid-division of the county, Leath ward and petty sessional division, union and county court district of Penrith, rural deanery of Penrith east, and archdeaconry and diocese of Carlisle. The church, of St. John the Baptist is a plain edifice of red freestone, in the Norman and Lancet styles, consisting of chancel, nave, aisle, south porch, and a western bell-gable with 2 bells: the stained east window is a memorial to the Rev. Edward Bowman, a former rector: in the church is a tomb bearing a female effigy, and during the restoration, a sepulchral slab was met with among the foundations incised with the inscription “HIC: IACET: IN: TVMBA: ROBERTVS: EPS;” probably a bishop of Carlisle, three of this Christian name having held the See in 1258, 1396 and 1537: the church was restored or rebuilt in 1878, at a cost of £1,000, and now affords 100 sittings. The registers of baptisms and burials date from the year 1644; marriages, 1664. The living is a rectory, net yearly value, from 648 acres of glebe, £300, with residence, in the gift of Mrs. Green, and held since 1891 by the Rev. Reginald Southwell Graham Green M.A. of Queen's College, Oxford. The Rev. Thomas Myers, 24 years vicar here, died 26th February, 1826, and is buried in Lazonby church. Here is a small Wesleyan, chapel, built in 1877, and seating 120 persons.
A fair was formerly held On the 18th of August for cattle and sheep. Limestone, red freestone and a species of marble are found here. Croglin Fell, a mountainous height in this locality, rising 1,940 feet above the level of the sea, containing 2,287 acres and Scarrowmanwick Fell, about 1,585 feet in height, are both on the south side of the village and afford good grouse shooting. In the summer of 1883, two portions of a stone mould for casting bronze implements were found in a quarry here, and are now in the museum at Carlisle. Philip, 4th Baron Wharton, in 1694, instituted a Bible Charity, from which 10 Bibles and 10 Prayer Books are annually contributed for the poor of Croglin. Threlkeld’s Charity of £20, given in 1793, is said to be lost. Lord Leconfield is lord of the manor, Edward Salvin Bowlby esq. M.A. Gilston Park, Herts, Mr. Mulcaster and the rector are the principal landowners. The arable land is of a heavy red sand, and the chief crops are barley, oats and turnips; the subsoil, clayey and limey. The area is 7,096 acres, a great portion of which is heath; rateable value, £2,468; the population in 1891 was 244.
National School (mixed), endowed in 1723 with the interest of £50, given by the Rev. Thomas Hunter, rector, 1691—1724; the school has also an endowment of £20 yearly, derived from 24 acres of land; it will hold 60 children; average attendance, 34.
