Civil & Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction
Historical Description
CULGAITH is a township and village, formerly in the parish of Kirkland, but formed into a separate parish 31 Oct. 1870; it is on the east side of the river Eden, near the road from Penrith to Appleby, with a station on the Midland railway, and is 6 ½ miles east-by-north from the Penrith junction station, on the London and North Western and Cockermouth, Keswick, and Penrith railways, 1 ½ north from Temple Sowerby in Westmorland, and is 24 from Carlisle and 267 from London, in the Mid division of the county, Leath ward and petty sessional division, union and county court district of Penrith, rural deanery of Penrith east, and archdeaconry and diocese of Carlisle. The church, founded by one of the ancient lords of the manor before 1456, and dedicated to All Saints, is a small edifice of stone, rebuilt on a cruciform plan, and consecrated in 1756; it consists of chancel, nave, west porch, and a turret containing 1 bell; in the south chapel is a brass to the Bowerbank family, and a marble tablet to Thomas Richardson, d. Jan. 1st. 1858; in the north chapel are brasses to Philip Golding, d. April 27th, 1792 and Thomas Westmorland, d. August 16th, 1798; and in the nave is a brass to Joseph and Ann Westmorland There are 200 sittings. The registers date from the year 1758. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £200 with Residence, in the gift of the vicar of Kirkland, and held since 1896 by the Rev. John Talbot Edwards M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. The vicarage house stands within its own grounds on an elevated site, commanding a splendid view of the surrounding country, and within 15 minutes from the station; attached to the house is a tennis court and a cricket field. There is a small Wesleyan chapel, built in 1830, and a reading room with bagatelle room attached. Bowerbank's gift of £18, left by William Bowerbank, and James Unthank’s benefaction of £20 for the poor, given in 1732, have both lapsed. Dover’s gift of £60 left by Daniel Dover, now produces £2 14s. yearly, which is lent to the school estate, and the proceeds are divided in bread on Sundays. There is no lord of the manor. Edward Wilson Parker esq. of Skirwith Abbey; John Dalrymple Maclean esq. of Lazonby; Capt. Anthony Metcalfe Gibson of Coldbeck, Westmorland; Montague Hughes Crackanthorpe esq. Q.C. of Newbiggin Hall, Westmorland; Henry Boazman esq. of Temple Sowerby, Westmorland and Richard Sewell of London, are the principal landowners. The soil is loam and clay, and the subsoil is clay. The chief crops are oats, barley, wheat and turnips, &c.; and there is some pasture land The area is 2,886 acres; rateable value, £4,647; the population in 1891 was 334.
Schools
A Free School was founded here on Culgaith common, in 1775, by the landowners of Culgaith and Blencarn & endowed with 100 acres of land. The present school was built in 1877 at a cost of £600, raised by a voluntary rate. The endowment, now producing £76 yearly, is equally divided between this school & the Board school at Blencarn.
National School (mixed), built in 1877 for 74 children, average attendance, 53.
