The church of St. Andrew is an ancient edifice of stone in the Norman style, consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave of four bays, aisles, south porch and a western tower, with plain parapet, containing 3 bells, the 1st is dated 1616; the others belong to the 15th century: a pointed arch divides the nave and chancel, and in the latter is the recumbent stone effigy of a knight in mail armour, with hauberk and gorget, his legs crossed, and his sword sheathed by his side; here also is the shaft of a stone cross of great age, known as the “Dacre Stone,” and possibly of the 7th or 8th century: the various memorials to the Hasell family of Dalemain, include a brass to Jane (Featherstonhaugh), wife 1st of Edward Kirkbride esq. and next of Edward Hasell esq. ob. 18 July, 1695; a monument of white marble to Sir Edward Hasel kt. The tower was rebuilt in 1810; in 1856 the church was repaired, and in 1874 was thoroughly restored and the tower repaired by public subscription, as a memorial to the late Edward Hasell esq. at a cost of £1,700: the church affords 280 sittings. In the churchyard are four huge stone sitting figures of animals, each clasping a pillar or staff, originally set up, it is said, to mark the boundary of the churchyard. The registers date from the year 1559, and include a register of Dissenters from 1719 to 1764. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £280, with residence, and 23 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Rev. John White, rector of Clayton, St. Cross, Manchester, and vicar here, 1880—90, and held since 1896 by the Rev. Francis Nalder Hasell, of St. Bees. Here is a Wesleyan chapel.

Dacre Castle, according to William of Malmesbury, who wrote in 1131, was the place where, in the early part of the 10th century, Constantine HI. King of the Scots, and Eugenius, King of Cumberland, submitted themselves and their territories to the protection of Athelstan, and it would therefore appear that there was some kind of stronghold here at an early period. The present budding however, as is evident from the details of its architecture, belongs to the Transition period of the Norman style, and may date from about the middle of the 13th century. In design it belongs to a class of crenellated and towered mansions, common to the north of England, and occupying an intermediate position between the peel towers of the border and castles proper. Dacre Castle stands on the left bank of the Dacre beck, at a point near the outlet of the valley, where the bank rises abruptly on the south and east to a height of 50 feet or more above the stream; on the other sides it was moated, and the moat, still perfect, encloses a quadrangular space about 80 by 60 yards; and is from 30 to 50 feet wide, the depth, originally, being from 12 to 20 feet, and it still contains water; the castle, the principal portion or keep of which stands at the eastern angle of this enclosed space, consists of a massive square embattled tower of three storeys, with large square turrets at the east and west angles, parallel to the sides of the main building, and about 66 feet high, and two smaller ones set diagonally at the north and south angles; the keep occupies generally, including these turrets, an area of about 66 by 45 feet. The interior contains, on the ground floor, two barrel vaulted chambers, with walls 8ft. 6in. thick; on the second floor, reached by a newel staircase, is the hall, quite of Early English date, and including an open fireplace and oven, and a piscina-like lavatory, over this is a chamber with open timbered roof, about 34 feet by 21 feet, and 17 feet high, with indications of the former existence of a minstrel’s gallery; in the eastern and northern turrets were bedrooms; the western was occupied by stairs, and the southern by offices. In the 17th century the fabric was madernized by the insertion of square-headed windows, and the construction of the present external entrance, this being done by Thomas, 15th Baron Dacre, created (5 Oct. 1674) Earl of Sussex; he died in 1715, when the earldom became extinct, and his daughter Anne, subsequently Baroness Dacre, sold the castle to Sir Christopher Musgrave, bart. of Edenhall, and it was afterwards sold to the Hasell family, and now belongs to John Edward Hasell esq. D.L., J.P. Dalemain, the seat of John Edward Hasell esq. D.L., J.P. is an ancient building surrounded by a well wooded park. Waterfoot, the residence of Mrs. Salmond, is pleasantly seated on the side of the lake, and commands a fine view of the mountain scenery. John Edward Hasell esq. who is lord of the manor and Andrew Hudleston esq. are the principal landowners. The soil, chiefly clay; crops, oats and pasturage. The area of the township is 1,147 acres; rateable value of the township, £1,424, and of the parish, £11,144; the population of the parish in 1891 was 942.
