Historical Description
The considerable village of Dalston is situated on the river Caldew; containing 457 inhabited houses, and 2716 inhabitants; this increase of population is, in the population report of 1821, ascribed to the new collieries established here. At the east end of the village is a Cross, raised on several steps, the shaft of which is sculptured with various coats of arms. The Church is a good stone building, without aisles: near the church is a field, called the Chapel Flat, supposed to have been the site of a chapel or hermitage of St. Wynemus, a canonized bishop of the 14th century. The situation is extremely romantic, being in a vale, environed by rocks and hanging woods: "Here (says Nicholson and Burn, in their history of this county) was anciently a British temple, or something of that sort; for a good many years ago, a circle of rude stones, each about three feet in diameter, was discovered; the whole circle being about thirty yards in circumference. Within the circle, towards the east point, were found four stones, much of the same form as the rest, lying one upon another, supposed to be something of the kistvaen kind. Not far from thence was a very regular tumulus, or barrow, about eight yards in diameter at the bottom, and two at the top, and about three yards in height.—When opened, two stones were found near the top, about three feet long, and one broad; each having a kind of circle rudely cut on the upper part. Nothing particular was discovered underneath, though the ground was opened more than four feet below the level."
Dalston Hall, the ancient seat of the Dalstons, but now the property of J. Sowerby, Esq. who purchased the estate in the year 1795, for upwards of 15,000l. The house is a venerable structure, apparently of the time of Richard HI. or Henry VII. but the exact time of its erection is unknown.
DALSTON is a parish and large village, pleasantly seated on the picturesque banks of the river Caldew, with a station on the Maryport and Carlisle railway, and is 4 ½ miles south-west from Carlisle and 7 ½ from Wigton, in the Northern division of the county, Cumberland ward and petty sessional division, union and county court district of Carlisle, rural deanery of Wigton, and archdeaconry and diocese of Carlisle. The inhabitants of Dalston are exempt from County Bridge rate by right of privileges claimed by and granted to the Bishop of Carlisle in the reign of Henry III. and have therefore control of their own bridges. From 1708 they were also exempted from paying toll on entering the city of Carlisle with produce, being then the Bishop’s tenants, and this custom still obtains. The church of St. Michael, originally built about the middle of the 12th century, is an edifice of red sandstone in mixed styles, consisting of chancel, nave, transepts, aisles, north porch, and a turret containing 2 bells. The lower portion of part of the walls is Transition Norman, and the chancel is Early English; in the angle of the transept near the priest’s doorway is a small window, possibly used for confessional purposes; the south aisle has a low stone seat running along the interior wall: in the chancel is a monument to the Rev. Walter Fletcher M.A. 53 years vicar, d. 1846, and three memorial windows to various members of the Cowen family; in the south transept is another, erected by subscription, at a cost of £30, to Edward Rainbow, Bishop of Carlisle, 1664—84, who is buried in the churchyard here; in the baptistery is a stained window, presented by Miss Kuper, late of Hawkesdale Hall, in commemoration of Hugh de Lilford, a hermit of this place in the 14th century, and there are two others erected by the Misses Donald, of Hallfleld, in memory of their father: the church was partly rebuilt in 1749; in 1875 the chancel was restored by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners at a cost of £800; and in 1890 the nave and aisles, were new-roofed, an organ chamber, vestry and north porch erected, the walls wainscoted and some new windows inserted, at a total cost of £2,000: there are 400 sittings. In the churchyard stands a fine cross in the Celtic style, marking the burial place of the Right Rev. Hugh Percy D.D. Bishop of Carlisle 1827—56. The registers date from the year 1568. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £233, net annual value £260, in the gift of the Bishop of Carlisle, and held since 1888 by the Rev. James Wilson M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. There is an endowment of £120 annually for a curate, provided by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners. The celebrated Dr, Paley, archdeacon of Carlisle, was vicar of this parish, 1776—93, and his successor, the Rev. Walter Fletcher, M.A. vicar general and chancellor of the diocese, who died in 1846, held this living for fifty-three years, and in the chancel of the church is a handsome marble monument to bis memory, from designs by Musgrava Lewthwaite Watson. The Free Methodist chapel on Dalston Green, erected 1851, is a building of white freestone, and will seat 250 persons. The cemetery on the east of the church and adjoining the old churchyard, was opened in 1864, and consists of 1a. 2r. 30p. of land, comprising part of the glebe and other land purchased with borrowed funds. It is intended for Dalston parish only, and is controlled by a burial board of nine members, three of whom retire annually. The Parochial Library, containing about 400 volumes, was established in 1874, and in 1893 the parishioners subscribed £20 for the enlargement of the library. The cross once standing at the east end of the village, and bearing the arms of John Kyte, Bishop of Carlisle, 1521—37, with other shields, was destroyed in 1815, and no certain remains of it now exist. At Chapel Flat, opposite Bracken How, megalithic remains, a stone circle and barrow have been recorded, and at the Toddlehill a tumulus, urns, ashes and bones; earthworks known as “The Bishop’s Dyke,” are also in this parish. The manufacture and spinning of cotton, and of agricultural implements, spades, shovels, and the making of edge tools, form the staple trade of the parish.
Charities:-Benson’s Charity of £66 invested in reduced stock and producing about £2 yearly, is for the poor. Strong’s, now about £5 a year, is for educational purposes. Tiffin’s bequest produces an annual interest of about £8, of which two-thirds is expended in education and one-third is reserved for distribution among the poor of the parish. Thomlinson’s gift of £2 18s. yearly is also for distribution in money. All these are derived from investments in the public funds. The School Stock Charity, the origin of which is unknown, consists of the yearly interest of £60 for educational purposes. New Hall Farm, confiscated to the Bishop of Carlisle in 1694, produces £20 annually, which is appropriated to the endowment of the Grammar School.
The Ecclesiastical Commissioners are lords of the manor and preserve the right of holding a manorial court in the Grammar School. The principal landowners of Dalston township are William Tennant Trimble, Geo. Robinson esq. and Charles Jackson esq. The soil is sandy loam; subsoil, gravel, variable to clay. The chief crops are oats, turnips and potatoes. There is also good grazing land The area of the parish is 12,331 acres of land and 86 of water; rateable value, £18,543; the population in 1891 was 2,004.
