Historical Description

DEARHAM is an extensive parish, township and village, with a station called Dearham Bridge, 1 mile noith-west, in the parish of Cross Canonby, and another called Dearham, ½ mile south-east, in the parish of Bridekirk, both stations being on the Maryport and Carlisle railway. The village of Dearham is 2 ½ miles east from Maryport, 6 north from Cockermouth, and 15 south-west from Wigton, in the Cockermouth division of the county, Cockermouth union, the ward of Allerdale-below-Derwent, petty sessional division of Derwent, county court district of Cockermouth, rural deanery of Maryport, and archdeaconry and diocese of Carlisle. The parish church (name unknown), is an edifice of sandstone, constructed in part of Roman material from the Roman station at Ellenborough, or others in this locality. It was originally Norman, the first church corresponding probably in length to the existing nave, or about 48 feet; to this a chancel, subsequently lengthened eastward, was added in the Early English period, and a north aisle in 1882, and the church now consists of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch, and a massive embattled western tower of the late 13th or early 14th century, about 40 feet in height, and containing one bell. The church was restored and enlarged by the addition of a north aisle in 1882, at a cost of £1,300, under the direction of Mr. C. J. Ferguson F.S.A. architect, of Carlisle. In the course of the work several discoveries were made of much local and antiquarian interest; excavations disclosed the foundations of the ancient east and west walls; at the east end of the south wall is a recess, beneath which and below the chancel floor on that side, several early interments were met with, the remains being laid on a bed of hazel or holly leaves, still preserved, or in a rude coffin with terminal wooden handles, and in each case hazel wands, in an almost perfect condition, were found laid upon and beneath the skeletons; many other instances of the depositing of hazel wands in tombs are on record, and the practice seems to have been handed down from a very remote period. There was also found the upper part of a small Roman altar, and an elaborately-sculptured grave-block, which had been built over the north doorway, and its ornamental work obscured by plaster and whitewash; it is a slab of yellowish-coloured sandstone four feet three inches long, with a breadth of 15 inches at one end, and 13 at the other, and is six inches thick; at the small end, in early lettering, is the word ADAM, and at the wider end, a portion of which has been broken off, is part of a Runic inscription, read by the Rev. W. S. Calverley F.S.A. vicar here 1877—85, “May Christ his soul save;” the sculptures, which are rudely executed, but exhibit great fertility of design, cover both the top and sides of the slab, and the upper series, which includes several figures, is undoubtedly intended to illustrate the Fall and Redemption of mankind. Various coffin lids, or sepulchral slabs, carved with crosses, swords, shears, and tracery, and previously in the porch and churchyard wall, besides other interesting fragments met with during the restoration, have been built into the walls of the porch and new aisle. There are 400 sittings. The register dates from the year 1662; an earlier register, dating from about 1560, appears now to he lost. The living is a vicarage, with the chapelry of Netherton annexed; net yearly value, £102, including glebe, with residence, in the gift of the trustees of W. B. Christian esq. and held since 1885 by the Rev. Thomas William Melrose, of Trinity College, Dublin and Durham University. A Mission Room was erected in 1891, at a cost of £600. There is a Wesleyan chapel, and a Primitive Methodist chapel, built in 1856. In the parish are extensive coal mines and a small pottery. Dearham Hall, now a farm house, occupied by Mr. John Gibson, standing east, of the church, was probably once fortified. The Earl of Lonsdale, who is lord of the manor, John Walker, John Wilson, and George Lightfoot esqs. and the trustees of the late F. L. Ballantine-Dykes, of Dovenby (d. 1866), are the chief landowners. The soil is loamy; the subsoil, gravel, loam, and strong clay. The crops are wheat, oats, barley and turnips. The acreage of the township is 2,060; rateable value, £6,225; the population in 1891 was 2,598 in the township and 7,069 in the parish.

In 1865 the invested capital was increased by £71, accumulated from surplus income & the yearly income is now (1896) £34. The whole of the above was transferred to the Church of England school on its formation in 1865. It was re-constituted in 1865, & has been twice enlarged since 1890, at a cost of nearly £800; the school will now hold 301 children; average attendance, 240.
